My favorite weekend of the year is coming up. In fact, it is here and I haven't posted this yet. Open House New York. I will be volunteering for 4 hours as I have done every year since this festival began. This year, I will be at a private garden in Kips Bay Towers from 11-3 on Saturday Oct 9th. Come visit me. Afterwards, I intend to visit Performance Space 122. I pass it every time I do a downtown loop and I have never been inside.
I have just returned from the launch party at the Penthouse of the Centurion. You can visit there on Saturday or Sunday. The gift from the launch party was the 5th edition of the AIA Guide To New York City. I have the 3rd addition. I am looking forward to seeing the difference.
Some of the food was supplied by The Meatball Shop. I ate there on the way to the volunteer meeting. The meatballs are great at the restaurant. They were good at the launch party but they were not an easy food for that kind of party. The volunteer meeting was at the Eldridge Street synagogue which will be part of OHNY on Sunday.
Some of the other places I have volunteered at in other years that are on the list this year are Tear Drop Park, the Chrysler building, and a variety of spaces in Red Hook. Speaking of the Chrysler building, what is missing from the postcard at left? While it is hard to date postcards, this one is earlier than the Chrysler building. The library is also on the list of places to visit during the weekend.
My favorite year was the first year when we moved over 1000 people through City Hall and the Tweed Courthouse in about 4 hours. Wish they'd open that spot again. I also love the St George Theater on Staten Island near the Ferry.
While the weekend is free, it does cost money to make it happen. So, there's a raffle you can enter and the proceeds will go to keeping the weekend FREE. Here's the link.
Enjoy your weekend. If you see an OHNY sign on a building - go visit!
I just corrected a spelling error thanks to friend and fellow tour guide Myra Alperson. For food tours in really great neighborhoods you should visit her website -http://noshwalks.com/ - Years ago Myra used to run a company called The Hungry Peddlers where we bicycled to these places but we are older and perhaps slower these days and we do have subways and buses in this town!
