On Saturday August 4th, I strolled summer streets alone from Union Square to and over the Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn Bridge Park and Jane's carousel. The portion of the trip on Lafayette Street from 14th to the Brooklyn bridge has such varied old and new architecture and funky shops. It is a street I rarely take.
Many more cyclists were heading North to the Park than South to Brooklyn but at 10 AM the Brooklyn Bridge was very crowded. The Brooklyn Bridge still has construction so views are blocked and paths are narrowed for quite a bit of the walk. Please, if you walk the Bridge stay in the pedestrian lanes for everyone's safety and pull over for pictures in the spaces where there is room. You will know them when you see them. Enjoy the views.
On the way from the Bridge to Brooklyn Bridge Park, I discovered one girl cookies.
This shop is really great and they take pride in their iced coffee. The ice cubes are made out of coffee so the drink never becomes watery!
Bubbies is nearby and their menu is looking really good these days.
My goal was Jane's Carousel which opens at 11. The view from the Merry Go Around is so much better than the view of the white structure that houses it from the Manhattan side of the River.
The ride is a bargain at 2 dollars for adults and big kids. Little kids go free. Beware, the outside horses are stationary. Now I understand why a group I'm guiding for in November wants to visit.
It was time to head to goal, the Soul of Brooklyn block party sponsored by The Museum of Contemporary African Diaspora Art. My friend's daughter is the executive director. I turned to hopstop rather than getting out a map. Turns out that the B25 bus took me from the piers right to where I needed to go. And, these blocks on Fulton from Lafayette to Carlton had great food and interesting shopping.
After lunch, I took the C train to 81st and Central Park West and walked home through Central Park. This was great training for my Damon Runyon 5k walk in Yankee Stadium on August 12th. Sorry none of you came along with me . It was fun and I covered a lot of interesting ground in about 6 leisurely hours.
Looking Ahead...Thursday August 9th meet me in Times Square (by the steps) at 7am for a great free morning look at Times Square and vicinity. We will finish by 8:30. Email me here if you are showing up.
I will probably head downtown to the South Street Seaport after breakfast if anyone is interested in a minitour that will get you to the TKTS booth downtown. After that, I will head uptown via a different route.
Saturday August 11th - more summer streets. This time we start from the clock in Grand Central at 9:45 and head North to 60th Street. We will leave the route and enter Central Park at 5th and Central Park South and stroll off road through the Park to the Upper West Side where some of us will head to brunch.
On August 18th, summer streets will be very crowded. If you would like to join me, meet me at Grand Central by the clock at 8 and we will subway to Brooklyn Bridge and walk back to Union Square where I will do my Greenmarket shopping. Have a great week.
