or Kids and Theater 4...My job was to find something to do with my niece W and great niece R when my nephew and great nephew headed to the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium today. So, we headed to the Holiday Show at the Central Park Swiss Cottage Marionette Theater. This was still on my bucket list.
We brought two of their friends since the guys went directly to Yankee Stadium. On the way, we stopped for an extremely quick lunch nearby at Uno's Pizza. Yes, I know it's a chain but their appetizer eggplant pizza was great and so were salads, kids pizza, and chicken fingers and the server knew we were on a mission and he got us out in time. I'd go back again if it were what I needed.
The Park looked great in the snow on the way in. The show was as it should have been. The 2-8 year old set in the front loved it. The marionettes and the filmed parts were creative. The price was right. Sadly, in this politically correct world it's hard to fashion a holiday kids show that takes in all the holidays celebrated by kids in NYC and this one was no exception. Also, because of political correctness most kids don't know the words to holiday songs. While it is easy to learn the words to the 12 Days of Christmas while singing it, the version being played was so over the top it was hard to sing along with it. I think their next production - Pippi Longstocking will probably be better.
Afterwards, the snow turned to rain and we skipped the very crowded Museum of Natural History and went to the New York Historical Society next door. The kids liked the movie, the toy trains and they enjoyed doing the scavenger hunt in the Children's Museum downstairs. We had a Middle Eastern snack stop on the way back to the subway at Sido's. The food was great. I left them at the train and I took the M4 back home.
Now, if you are here in January and Marionettes are not for your children then perhaps the winter production at TADA will work for you and TADA Theater is near the Museum of Mathematics.
And, last but not least Kids Night on Broadway 2012 is coming up soon. Tickets go on sale January 9th for shows from February 25 to March 3. (Oh Syracuse won the Pin Stripe Bowl) Happy New Year.
