After the horriffic event in Connecticuit this weekend, I am afraid that Public Schools all over the country will take more of their already stretched budgets from teaching needs to security.
I believe in Public Schools. I went to Public School in New Jersey and all of my great nieces and nephews attend Public School in New Jersey and Arizona. ((off topic) - Sometimes I think that if the parents of NYC's one percent spent the time energy and money that they spend removing their children from NYC's Public School system then we would have the greatest Public School system in the country)
While doing a job search, I rediscovered Donors Choose. Myra, one of my tour guide friends who runs Nosh Walks also teaches special education in the New York Public School System. She has funded a couple of projects through Donors Choose.
I made two small donations to projects for classrooms that are still in alternate locations because of Hurricane Sandy. I know where that money is going and how it will help. I have been able to introduce my great niece and nephew to theater by taking them to TADA Theater. But, what about kids whose parents can't afford the money for a school field trip? I saw a TADA trip listed.
Public School teachers need help all over the country! If you are a teacher, list a project. If you are a parent or a student who is luckier than most, donate to a Donors Choose project that you think is important. Or, give a gift of a Donors Choose amount to the person in your life who already has everything. The projects are located all over the country.
If you give or post, do me a favor, when they ask how you heard about this, say it was me - Susan Katz - ztaks@aol.com . I do NOT work for Donors Choose although I have submitted an on line application. I just want to see how much good I can do with my on-line reach. Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for a Healthy, Happier and Safer New Year for all.
I'm the "Myra" Susan refers above. I just want to second her endorsement of Donors Choose. I've gotten thousands of dollars worth of materials for my resource room in a NYC public school and I now from time to time send donations to other teachers seeking similarly to stock our classes. Many of us spend money out of pocket for class materials. We used to get a "Teachers Choice" reimbursement of $150. When budget cuts came, our salaries were frozen and the Teachers Choice reimbursement was scaled WAY back. This year we're getting a piddling $45 back. So... support a NYC teacher! Many are in schools affected by Hurricane Sandy, so you can look for schools in Staten Island, the Rockaways and lower Manhattan, for starters.
Your donations are tax-deductible. I LOVE Donors Choose and am VERY grateful for its past support. You can make a difference this way!
