The infamous Chelsea Hotel is no longer what it used to be sad to say. But, the atmosphere has been reproduced this month in a play called Brendan at the Chelsea at the Acorn Theatre on Theatre Row. The play has been imported from The Lyric Theatre of Belfast and is and is associated with the 1st Irish festival(music and theatre) that is taking place in theatres all over town during September. Here are links to a few of the other shows.
Back to Brendan. I've never seen The Hostage or read any of Brenda Behan's books. The play made me curious so I did some looking around on Amazon. The plays are easy to find. Brendan Behan's New York is out of print so perhaps I will read it some day at the best library in the world.
Theatre Row has many small theatres. And, what a change it is from the chaos of the theater district.
Food? My friend told me to meet him at a Thai restaurant on 10th Avenue that no longer existed. On the way there, I spotted several interesting restaurants between 42nd and 47th on 10th that I would happily try in the future and an Ethiopian restaurant that I have enjoyed on other occasions. We actually headed back to 9th and ate at en excellent local Japanese restaurant between 44th and 43rd. Can't remember the name and I want to keep it local!
