First Fashion. For those of you who don't have the dollars or the connections to go to Fashion Week shows in and around Lincoln Center there is an affordable uptown option on Thursday February 13th at the United Palace of Cultural Arts:details here.
Then, return to the glorious United Palace of Cultural Arts dressed in a gown or tux and you will receive FREE popcorn at their screening of one of my favorite New York City films, West Side Story, with Spanish subtitles, on Sunday February 23rd. Tickets are reasonably priced too.
In the last few years, I have seen and written about West Side Story on several occasions. The guest list for this upcoming screening has not been announced but I have some suggestions. I hope they:
Invite a performer from the recent Broadway Production which was performed in Spanish and English.
Invite a New York Philharmonic musician who participated in the 50th Anniversary screening where the score was played live.
Invite one of the local dancers from the original film. A bunch of them recently wrote a memoir called The Jets and the Sharks: Our Story.
Invite members of The Harlem Repertory Theatre. Their current off off Broadway season which includes Finian's Rainbow, Flahooley and For Colored Girls has been extended thru February 9th. While it is not on the website, when I saw Finian's Rainbow and Flahooley earlier this month, the program said that the Theatre was considering doing an up close and personal off off Broadway production of West Side Story in the very near future.
More when I know more.
