Last Sunday (Dec 29, 2013) I saw two Yip Harburg Musicals at the 60 seat Harlem Repertory Theatre: Finian's Rainbow and Flahooley. I had never seen either musical and knew little about them except for some of the songs. If you are reading this post before Jan 12, 2014, you can buy tickets here.
I went back to Our Musicals Ourselves and found out a lot about Finian's Rainbow and nothing about Flahooley. This seemed odd since Harburg was being questioned by the McCarthy gang when he wrote it. Some more reading revealed that most of the subversive political stuff like Flahooley saying Dirty Red was whitewashed out of the play during out of town tryouts and only brought back in much later revivals. (I wouldn't mind it if the Forgotten Musicals gang added some comments with more information here.
There's more to say. Will update with comments and/or links but if/when you make the trip to this theatre there are many places to visit and eat in the neighborhood. My favorites: the Schomburg Center, Hamilton Grange, City College, Miss Maude's, Maysles Cinema, Red Rooster, Sylvia's, etc.
