I recently received an e-mail telling the story of Brutus (shown in attached photo), a canine Medal of Honor recipient. The e-mail describes Brutus as a 200 pound part Boxer, part British Bull Mastiff who did a tour of duty in Iraq. The story goes on about how Brutus rescued his handler and four other soldiers who were taken hostage by insurgents, thus earning his high honor. The story concludes with "he's a big old lug and wants to sit in your lap. Enjoys the company of cats."
And it is that ending which caused me to wonder about "a 200lb lap dog"? And is Brutus likely to "enjoy the company of cats"? I headed over to one of my favorite sites, Snopes, where I learned that this is not a true story in any respect. One thing they point out is that the dog in the photo is likely a Belgian Malinois. Who knew? Other than "boxer" I never heard of any of these breeds. Read the story on Snopes for a full explanation and also the likely story of the dog shown in the photograph.
They don't say if the real dog shown enjoys the company of cats, but I'm guessing not. And I wouldn't want that dog in my lap either. . .
