A bear cub confronts a stalking cougar -- and the hunt begins. This is a clip from the Oscar nominated nature file "The Bear."
A bear cub is playfully rolling on his back, all alone and blissfully unaware of impending danger. The camera cuts to the cougar, his eyes focuses on the cub and he licks his lips. It's obvious what he's thinking and he soon springs into action. The cub looks up and heads off running, already you can hear him breathing hard and whimpering. At one point the cub stops to look back at his pursuer and he yelps in despair when he sees that the cougar is closing in. They face off on a tree fallen over a stream, the bear falls into the rushing water and clings to a log and starts floating downstream. The cougar, like all cats, seems to prefer to stay dry, so he runs ahead along on the bank until he comes to a row of rocks jutting out of the water that he positions himself on, waiting for the current to bring the cub to him. Watch the video to see how it ends.
The photography and sound effects are brilliant. The drama has you on the edge of your seat. I found myself rooting for the cub, maybe because he is a cute, innocent baby and probably because of the sound track with the bear's whimpering, scared noises. I imagine most people will react the same -- how about you?
