Canterbury and the Tate Modern
Today began with a trip to Canterbury. I spent my junior year at University of Kent up on the hill out of town. While time did not permit me to go up the hill, I did visit the house I lived in many many years ago on Lady Wooten's Green. Today it is a school for teaching English. I rang the doorbell. No one answered. I gently pushed the door and it opened. Had a look around. Spooky with no one there. On the "Way Out" I saw a sign that said please close the door firmly when you leave. And so I did.
When I went to Canterbury it was a sleepy small town with a small university and teacher's college. Today the student population is well over 20,000 and while the "authentic" framework of the old town exists it is quite "Disneyfied" with all the stores you know and love on the ground floors of the buildings. Still I think it is a great place to spend a junior year abroad.
Back in London, I caught up with friend Kathleen who lived in NYC many years ago. We had a wander in town and then went to the Tate Modern. We ended up having a lovely dinner there as well. Then I headed back to Clapham Junction.
