Psychic Kids

Another post on psychics, now this one for kids. Let's file this under "how low can you go".

Kid_nose

Apparantly it seems that certain networks will stoop to new lows to mine the psychic and supernatural programming market. A network-not-named posted an ad on craigslist for "psychic children" where perceptive little tykes can be shipped off for a three day program where their abilities can be tested and verified. I think that if they are really psychic, they can smell this thing before it lands.

How psychic are you?

  • I am good at guessing the future but am not always right.
  • I rely on others to predict the future.
  • Sometimes my dreams come true
  • I am not psychic at all!
  • Sometimes I can tell what is going to happen before it happens
  • My pet is psychic, not me
  • On a "psychic ability" scale of 1-10, I would be a five

Walnuts and Blueberries

It is difficult especially during the holiday season to stick to sensible eating and drinking. However hope springs eternal that their may be something that I injest in December that has at least a small amount of healthy benefit. (Let's not harp on how healthy chocolate is for us - that can go only so far!)

So looking at one of my favorite sites - Science Daily - I find something not only healthy to eat this time of year but also palatable. And if it delays the aging process, all the better!

Here are the highlights. Read the full article on the site.

Diet Of Walnuts, Blueberries Improve Cognition; May Help Maintain Brain Function

Blueberries and walnuts. Diets containing two percent, six percent, or nine percent walnuts, when given to old rats, were found to reverse several parameters of brain aging, as well as age-related motor and cognitive deficits. Junk food junkies take notice. What you eat does more than influence your gut. New studies show that diet may have implications for those who suffer from certain brain ailments.

Diets containing two percent, six percent, or nine percent walnuts, when given to old rats, were found to reverse several parameters of brain aging, as well as age-related motor and cognitive deficits. Old rats maintained for two months on diets containing two percent high antioxidant strawberry or blueberry extracts exhibited reversals of age-related deficits in the way that neurons function and in motor and cognitive behavior.

A six percent diet is equivalent to a person eating 1 ounce of walnuts each day, which is the recommended amount to reduce harmful low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, cholesterol, while a nine percent diet is equivalent to people eating 1.5 ounces of walnuts per day. The addition of walnuts, berries, and grape juice to the diet may increase 'health span' in aging and provide a 'longevity dividend' or economic benefit for slowing the aging process by reducing the incidence and delaying the onset of debilitating degenerative disease. Other research shows that walnut extract may play a role toward developing novel treatments for Alzheimer's.

Another avenue of research regarding a link between diet and the brain shows that blueberries contain compounds that can reduce inflammation in the central nervous system. Dietary intake of blueberries has been shown to alleviate cognitive decline associated with disease and aging.

Supplementing the diet of old rats with blueberries for a relatively short period (8 weeks), resulted in maintenance and rejuvenation of brain circuitry. A two percent blueberry extract is equivalent to a human having about half a cup of blueberries added to their daily diet.

It is known that individuals who consume a diet high in fruits and vegetables are less likely to develop some of the neurodegenerative diseases associated with aging and may not exhibit declines in motor and cognitive function that are as great as those seen in people whose consumption is less.
