Urban Street Memorials

There is nothing worse than losing a loved one. Many bereaved people find ways to memorialize their lost ones in the public living space. How often have you passed a flowered cross on the side of the road to commemorate someone who perished there? For a family in New York City, the corner of 49th Street and First Avenue is the spot for their memorial to daughter Amelia Geocos who died while riding her bicycle.

Bicycle

Shortly after Ms. Geocos was killed, someone anonymously placed a bike at the accident scene, a practice that has been taken up by bicycle advocates as a way to call attention to the deaths of bikers on city streets. Advocates say that about 20 bicyclists a year have been killed in New York City since 2005.

When Marian Geocos was contacted by the New York City Street Memorial Project, which has installed dozens of memorial bikes throughout the city since 2005, and told that a bike had been put up in her daughter’s memory, she expressed gratitude but said she preferred a bike with more personal meaning.

The memorial is a flower bedecked white Schwinn bicycle that is chained to a post on the corner. It is a five-speed Schwinn cruiser that Ms. Geocos’s mother, Marian, used to take her daughter around on when she was a little girl. Now adorned with flowers and Mardi Gras beads, it has also been decorated over the months with candles, old photos and farewell notes from friends. It is a sidewalk memorial that Ms. Geocos’s family keeps careful watch over.

We have our own personal ways of grieving and the Memorial project is one way to help in the urban landscape. For more information read Death at an Early Age and the Urban Scene: The Case for Memorial Murals and Community Healing

Astrological Investing Blog

Talk about a timely blog! Astrological Investing has just launched a blog component by astrologers  Marley and Kaye. The blog will serve the needs of the astrologicalinvesting.com Home site which is a financial astrology teaching web site on the world wide web that teaches the basics of financial astrology.

People have horoscopes. So do buildings, companies, storms and anything with a start and a finish. Even questions can be charted (like in horary astrology). So when a company is born, we can cast its birth chart and see how the life course of that entity will be affected by certain planetary placements in the chart, any hard or soft transits against the chart and any aspects in and out of the chart over time. Is it an innately creative company? Is it a risk taker or pioneer? Is it prudent? Will it have a hard hit to the chart at some point (sell!!). Will a new CEO help or hurt the company? (You can also compare both the company's birth chart and the chart of Senior Management to see if they "mesh". All good things to know before you invest.

So I look for great things from this blog. Now that the Dow has plunged below 7000, I need all the help I can get!! So here is a great array of Financial Astrology Books to get started.

Horoscope for Week of March 23, 2009

Estrada Make room for energetic Mars as it pushes its way through Pisces. We receive a burst of new energy this week. There is nothing as powerful as an idea whose time has come. Hurry up and move on it before it goes. Use your energy to good advantage, read A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose (Oprah's Book Club, Selection 61).

ARIES   (MARCH 21 - APRIL 20)
Rams have a way of unearthing the truth even when it’s deeply buried and practically invisible. There is no reason to accept anything at face value now since much of what is left unsaid is much more useful to you than what is exposed. Be strategic, calm, evasive and look under the surface for clues. There is plenty of time to manipulate them to your liking later.

TAURUS   (APRIL 21 - MAY 21)
Your life in general revs to a roar. Bulls with a yen for company will find it ... in droves. Place yourself where it will do you the most good in the long term. There is a lot that you need to accomplish on a personal level over the next year or so and the connections you make now will decide whether that road is slick, gravelly or smooth. Hob nob from the top down.

GEMINI   (MAY 22 - JUNE 21)
You may become too too much in your quest for advancement. Twins need to feel appreciated  and recognized for their considerable efforts but how much can you ask of bosses now? If you are seeking employment, this is the time to try something unexpected that will heighten your profile and get yourself noticed. Wearing a cellophane suit however is not that thing.

CANCER   (JUNE 22 - JULY 23)
Brush up on your various skill sets, Crab. Higher education and other forms of study - both formal and informal - prove to be more valuable than you initially think. Your inquisitive mind needs nourishment beyond the occasional cable program. So carve out the time and ramp up the effort. Can an old dog learn  new tricks? Take a few lessons from a magician.

LEO   (JULY 24 - AUGUST 23)
Get ready for tax season, Lion. Despite your best efforts to put off the inevitable, it is time to turn to fiscally prudent and accurate analysis of your state of affairs. Survey the potential damage with a good advisor. But all is not doom and gloom; Expect a zetz in your love life. It is the spice you need to keep things interesting and passionate. Be flexible and very pliable.

VIRGO   (AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 23)
Open enemies are no match for you! Virgins can be diplomatic or aggressive and see success in whatever option they choose. Mold relationships more to your liking and needs but try to appear to be fair. For those seeking new liaisons, rely on your gut feelings as you scan the playing field. Displaying too much gut though is not recommended.

LIBRA   (SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23)
Maybe it is time for a pet or a workout. Or maybe a workout with a pet. Libras are too stressed out. Anything that gets you to rest, relax and recharge has multiple benefits. Clean out your in box and push more into your garbage file. You find alternative ways to clear and unload clutter. Use the time to tone and buff your bod instead of just lifting the occasional paper weight.

SCORPIO   (OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 22)
There are no straight lines to success. Linear thinking will get you nowhere and actually take you far off the mark. Use your ample imagination and creativity to chart your course over the next couple of years. Scorps are often very intense. Now put that passion to work on your own agenda. If that means throwing a not-to-be-missed basheroo, so be it.

SAGITTARIUS   (NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 22)
Archers are not stay-at-home types but consider giving it a try this week. Find creative ways to enhance your surroundings and make them more stimulating and enjoyable. One great way is to plan the perfect get together with the usual unusual crowd that will have them talking for weeks. Well, even a couple of days is better than your average...

CAPRICORN   (DECEMBER 23 - JANUARY 20)
Caps are expected to always be logical and exact. However this week your actions do not always match your words. While you think you can spread your oil and slide by, your grease could begin to fry and burn. If you find yourself criticized for saying one thing and doing another, just tell the confused crowd that you are running for political office.

AQUARIUS   (JANUARY 21 - FEBRUARY 19)
If money has been tight, this week will either help you invest more wisely or cajole you into unnecessary spending. But is it something that you want to risk right now, Aquarius? Take care in any situation that requires a monetary outlay of any kind. Perhaps it is better to err on the side of thrift and cheapness. But don’t worry, this too shall soon pass.

PISCES   (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20)
Last week you had exciting thoughts and this week you can match these thoughts with successful action. There is something energizing about you. Begin new projects, get yourself in front of important, meaningful projects. You make a strong advances that set the stage for future success. Don’t wait for the world to rouse you. If you snooze, you will oversleep and lose.

Welcome the Spring Equinox!

Equinox March 21 hearkens in the Spring season and it is known as the Spring Equinox. It is also, in Zonoastarism, called the holiday of Noruz. The Spring Equinox is a time of rebirth after a long winter and has been celebrated with eggs (the beginning of life), greenery, maypoles (fertility) and everything that indicates that we are ready to begin again with fresh energy.

The wikipedia definition of Equinox gives a nice short definition of the phenomena from an scientific perspective: The name is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because at the equinox the night and day are equally long. The term equinox can also be used in a wider sense, as the date (day) that such a passage happens.

But I prefer the religious and astrological aspects to the Equinox. The Spring Equinox is associated with, or known as: Alban Eilir, Eostar, Eostre, Feast of Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Festival of Trees, Lady Day, NawRuz, No Ruz, Ostara, Ostra, Rites of Spring, and the Vernal Equinox.

No matter how you approach this day, find ways to celebrate the coming of the warmer weather and the joy of living and growing.
