Buddha's Book of Sleep

Sleeping BuddhaDo you ever have trouble falling asleep. I often do. But now I hear that something as simple as just closing your eyes and trying to fall asleep is not the way to go.

According to Joseph Ernet, author of Buddha's Book of Sleep: Sleep Better in Seven Weeks with Mindfulness Meditation , you should use Buddhist principles to help glide you into slumber. That means not closing your eyes but keeping them open and allowing them to tire naturally like when they become droopy as you read a book. Also, concentrate on your breathing to shut out other thoughts.Or doing some yoga-like gratification mental exercises to help your mind relax.

I am ready to try anything!

7 Reasons Why Coffee Is Really Good For You

CoffeeI can't tell you how many times I have read articles about foods and beverages that are not good for you ... until they are. Take red wine, for eample. Doctors say that it increase the risk of certain kinds of cancer. But then there are doctors who find that drinking a glass of red wine a day decreases your risk of heart attack. Coffee is another example of good news / bad news. But I think the solution is to take everything in moderation.

Here is a fascinating article on why coffee is actually very good for you. Coffee attributes are listed below. Check out the article (linked above) to read the details.

1. Coffee Can Make You Smarter

The active ingredient in coffee is caffeine. Caffeine potently blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, leading to a net stimulant effect. Controlled trials show that caffeine improves both mood and brain function.

2. Coffee Can Help You Burn Fat and Improves Physical Performance

Caffeine raises the metabolic rate and helps to mobilize fatty acids from the fat tissues. It can also enhance physical performance.

3. Coffee May Drastically Lower Your Risk of Type II Diabetes

Drinking coffee is associated with a drastically reduced risk of type II diabetes. People who drink several cups per day are the least likely to become diabetic.

4. Coffee May Lower Your Risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

Not only can coffee make you smarter in the short term, it may also protect your brain in old age. Coffee is associated with a much lower risk of dementia and the neurodegenerative disorders Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

5. Coffee May be Extremely Good For Your Liver

Multiple studies have shown that coffee can lower the risk of cirrhosis by as much as 80%, the strongest effect for those who drank 4 or more cups per day. Coffee may also lower the risk of liver cancer by around 40%. Coffee appears to be protective against certain liver disorders, lowering the risk of liver cancer by 40% and cirrhosis by as much as 80%.

6. Coffee May Decrease Your Risk of Dying

In two very large prospective epidemiological studies, drinking coffee was associated with a lower risk of death by all causes. This effect is particularly profound in type II diabetics, one study showing that coffee drinkers had a 30% lower risk of death during a 20 year period. Coffee consumption has been associated with a lower risk of death in prospective epidemiological studies, especially in type II diabetics.

7. Coffee is Loaded With Nutrients and Antioxidants

A cup of coffee contains:

6% of the RDA for Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5).
11% of the RDA for Riboflavin (Vitamin B2).
2% of the RDA for Niacin (B3) and Thiamine (B1).
3% of the RDA for Potassium and Manganese.

Coffee also contains a massive amount of antioxidants. In fact, coffee is the biggest source of antioxidants in the western diet, outranking both fruits and vegetables combined. Coffee contains a decent amount of several vitamins and minerals. It is also the biggest source of antioxidants in the modern diet.

Take Home Message

Even though coffee in moderate amounts is good for you, drinking way too much of it can still be harmful. I’d also like to point out that many of the studies above were epidemiological in nature. Such studies can only show association, they can not prove that coffee caused the effects.

To make sure to preserve the health benefits, don’t put sugar or anything nasty in your coffee! If it tends to affect your sleep, then don’t drink it after 2pm. At the end of the day, it does seem quite clear that coffee is NOT the villain it was made out to be. If anything, coffee may literally be the healthiest beverage on the planet.

Horoscope for Month of August 2013 and Week of July 29, 2013

Bill clintonThe dog days of summer heat up with lots of planetary movement. All personal planets change signs and some oppose retrograde outer planets. Actions can go into overdrive for the next few weeks, run amok and lead us into unalterable changes. Will it be a howl at the moon or dance under the stars? It’s your move.

ARIES   (MARCH 21 - APRIL 20)
Minor home-based decisions have mammoth repercussions in your long term plans and life mission. Move a couch and create a sinkhole. So my advice for any Aries who is hankering for domestic transition is to wait until the fall. Only then can you more easily accomplish what you initially set out to do without any surprising fallout. Meantime, enjoy the peace and quiet.

TAURUS   (APRIL 21 - MAY 21)
Stray thoughts and minor comments resonate through the cosmos. This is great if you are interested in creating a ruckus but not so great if you want to quietly work behind the scenes. Taureans should keep their opinions to themselves for now. Think happy thoughts. You can unfurl your manifesto later this year and create a winter revolution.

GEMINI   (MAY 22 - JUNE 21)
Geminis may blow their carefully crafted budget now as their eyes (and desires) grow too big for their wallets. This can get you into a financial hole if you are not careful. Lovers and other hangers-on may make their demands, but that doesn’t mean that you have to agree to them. In fact, being a little thrifty now may offer more to spend later this year.

CANCER   (JUNE 22 - JULY 23)
What is yours is yours and what is theirs is .... yours? Now, now Cancer. You can’t achieve balance in relationships if you are not willing to give a little. But giving up too much is not a good thing either. Your mission now is to achieve balance between the “I” and the “We”. Discover the connections as well as the individual needs. Achieve nirvana as the year progresses.

LEO   (JULY 24 - AUGUST 23)
Ongoing stress has a way of contributing to any of your physical ailments. This is the time to deal with the burden of any secrets or psychological baggage in your life. Leos always want to put on the very best face to the crowds. It is still possible to continue your big performance but at very least wrestle with your skeletons backstage.

VIRGO   (AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 23)
Friends can lead you into mischief if you heedlessly follow their lead. Lucky thing! Virgos may unwittingly go overboard in the thrill of the moment. Think before you leap and see if what pals do is something that you really want to do too. If not, go it alone. Even better, connect with new acquaintances or groups that give you something that pals can’t at this time.

LIBRA   (SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23)
Your career commands center stage and seems to require all of your attention. The power brokers like what they see in you and opportunities open up before you. Jump into the shark tank with your harpoon, Libra, and go hunting. But too much focus on your professional path can make partners and family feel left out. Can you find time for both? Let’s just see.

SCORPIO   (OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 22)
You step into the global stage and are ready to create a big splash. But your words might be taken out of context and you may flub a vital point. There is no erase and re-record option here, Scorpio. So be very careful with what you say and how you say it, especially where it can land you in the deep end. Keep your thoughts fluid but don’t gush.

SAGITTARIUS   (NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 22)
Lovers and their demands may become more trouble and much more expensive than they’re worth at this time. Are you prepared to give in to every little whim?  If so, be prepared to pay dearly for it. Otherwise be kind but firm. Sagittarians are advised to window shop rather than buy. Enjoy things in small bursts. Ah, isn’t that the way it always is?

CAPRICORN   (DECEMBER 23 - JANUARY 20)
Relationships begin to consume you and you might change your entire outlook and life direction because of them. Try not to fall into someone else’s concept of who you should be. Retain your individuality and own sense of destiny and purpose. And most importantly, know yourself and what works best for you. There is time to be a pair. But a pair of what, Capricorn?

AQUARIUS   (JANUARY 21 - FEBRUARY 19)
Potholes in your job can cause unintended tumult when and where you least expect it. Things that you have put off doing and colleagues that you might have mentally written off, come back to bite you. But all is not late nights and weekends working back into any good graces, Aquarius. Redeem yourself with careful and calculate apple polishing. Rubadub!

PISCES   (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20)
What seems like carefree fun may lead to serious changes in the dynamics of certain friendships. Maybe you have out grown some pals. Or maybe your interests are taking a different direction. Whatever it is, be prepared to go out on your own and create new associations that are more in sync with your creative passions. Swim in new pools, Pisces..

Lucky Numbers for the Week of July 26, 2013

Lottery ads tell us you only need a dollar and a dream. But it is also helpful to have a list of lucky numbers to help spur the good fortune ... or fortunes. So with that in mind, here are some lucky numbers that can be used in any helpful way. I gazed into a pool of water, Nostradamus-like, and contemplated the cosmos. Then I mixed the tarot cards and allowed the spirits to guide me to the cards that represent the lucky numbers for this week. Nothing is guaranteed but who knows ....?

I choose eight numbers because 8 is the number of wealth.

Here are the lucky numbers for the week of July 26-Aug 1, 2013:

6, 27, 39, 40, 43, 55, 67, 72

Yoga Works Wonders on Cardiovascular Health

Yoga2It is no surprise that yoga has many health benefits. In fact, many in the medical community prescribe yoga to promote cardiovascular health and manage heart conditions.

“If more of my patients practiced yoga, I would have more time to practice yoga.” So says Dr. Gervasio Lamas, chief of the Columbia University Division of Cardiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, and he not only prescribes the ancient Hindu practice, but he takes the medicine, too.

“As you move into your 50s you get these funny aches and pains. Yoga chases that away,” he said. “I remember when I was beginning to get up in the morning, different, random, stupid things would hurt. My wife got me to start doing yoga and it all went away.”

The key to this is strength, flexibility and balance. It consumes calories. You get stronger. If you work your way into a vigorous yoga practice there are cardiovascular benefits associated with it. You have the opportunity to make it as hard or as easy as you want.

Reduce stress, strengthen muscles, strengthen bones, help your heart. So what are you waiting for?
