Ask Madam Lichtenstein - How Reliable is a Daily Horoscope?

Tarot reader 1Vienna, VA: How reliable is a daily or weekly horoscope? Is it possible to "pin-point" such a small time period? How do you reconcile having only 12 astrological sun signs when there are really 13 full moons each year?

Charlene Lichtenstein: Unless you have an inordinate amount of planets in a particular sign I would say that weekly, daily and monthly horoscopes are for pure entertainment purposes only.

Many astrologer uses moon cycles as well in their analyses so it is a viable addition to a chart analysis.

Horoscope for the Week of February 10, 2014

Lady gagaMercury in Pisces is on a rampage - retrograding back into Aquarius, squaring stern Saturn and then redirecting. Whatever excites our imaginations or spurs our thoughts suddenly makes it all go crazy kaboom this week. Hold on to your seats, friends, and prepare for a mind bending rollercoaster ride.

ARIES   (MARCH 21 - APRIL 20)
Let’s see how far afield your intuition leads you with friends. Aries allow their emotions to get the better of their common sense and may now say anything (and everything) that pops out of their minds. Shocking! Instead of shooting from the lip, why not use those lips for something less biting? Sugar your thoughts and see what sweet things can get cooking.

TAURUS   (APRIL 21 - MAY 21)
Taureans find themselves joining in the camaraderie but wind up being stuck with the bar tab for all their friends and assorted hangers-on. You work too hard for your money to squander it. Well, it’s one way to be popular... While this pricey platonic period shall pass, be especially careful about the who, what, when, where and how in the meantime. Why? Just because.

GEMINI   (MAY 22 - JUNE 21)
Your career may weigh you down when you want to escape and soar. It will be an either / or situation. Geminis may be offered a step up the corporate ladder but it will require that you give up something that you personally value and that makes you happier, at least in the short term. Will you sell your soul for a bit of power, money and prestige? Hey who wouldn’t!

CANCER   (JUNE 22 - JULY 23)
Travel brings out of control adventure. And maybe too much so. You need to get out of your usual neighborhood and expand your horizons but know when to say when. Expect a few interesting detours in your itinerary. Not only do Cancer the Crabs trip over their claws to make their big move, the end result will be upending. Maybe that is good...?

LEO   (JULY 24 - AUGUST 23)
Leos are on a personal rampage and find themselves wandering in new pastures and around a few new characters. But what is it about your current social scene that manages to mix a potent cocktail of overlapping love affairs? Chalk it up to miscommunication and a ready heart. Carelessness can create a sexual feast that leads to heartburn. So pack the pepto.

VIRGO   (AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 23)
There will be times this week when you pine for a bit of peace and quiet where you can cuddle quietly with your significant other (or even an insignificant other). Make very merry while you can. Fairly soon your job demands will eclipse your domestic bliss. Virgos need to focus on putting out fires at work while their sexual fires cool. Hurry and stoke the embers.

LIBRA   (SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23)
Sociable Libras find it difficult to concentrate on job details when there are so many enjoyable activities available to them this week. The old familiar routines suddenly become too boring and predictable. But sometimes predictability is just what we need to avoid trouble and complication. But maybe you are into trouble and complication...?

SCORPIO   (OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 22)
Don’t be surprised if you have several choices of parties, pastimes, fun times this week. Scorpios can not only can maximize their jollies they are also apt to go too, too far in their enjoyment. Is this a bad thing? Cats generally have nine lives, but in reality we only live once. Will you become tired and dissipated  from all the festivities? Ah, you should only wish.

SAGITTARIUS   (NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 22)
Be careful of creating an imbalance between certain demanding relationships and the peacefulness of your home life. Compromise may be required, Sagittarius, but be sure you know all the facts before you give up anything. Any home renovation or redecoration should be carefully spelled out to contractors and designers. Did you say green or groin? It is so confusing!

CAPRICORN   (DECEMBER 23 - JANUARY 20)
You may think that you are especially charming and diplomatic but as the week progresses you may find that others disagree. Capricorns can become pushy around their pals and may not realize their impact on others. Instead of offering an opinion or even a helping hand, why not just sit back and observe? Wield your persuasive power by doing nothing.

AQUARIUS   (JANUARY 21 - FEBRUARY 19)
Money will not buy you the cache and power you think it will.  Aquarians begin their week with a lift in their heart and a heft in their wallets. There are no limits to your ambition. But too, too soon your expenses exceed your expectations. Is it really worth all the effort when good old hard work will accomplish the exact same thing. Do I hear a “yes”?!

PISCES   (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20)
Not only are you the center of attention, you manage to make a big splash in any important international social pool. You are pushed into the deep end and will learn how to swim with the sharks. Will you float above the rest or dog paddle to the nearest shore? This week can change the course of your destiny. That can be a good thing, Pisces as long as you pack a compass.

Lucky Numbers for the Week of February 7, 2014

Lottery ads tell us you only need a dollar and a dream. But it is also helpful to have a list of lucky numbers to help spur the good fortune ... or fortunes. So with that in mind, here are some lucky numbers that can be used in any helpful way. I gazed into a pool of water, Nostradamus-like, and contemplated the cosmos. Then I mixed the tarot cards and allowed the spirits to guide me to the cards that represent the lucky numbers for this week. Nothing is guaranteed but who knows ....?

I choose eight numbers because 8 is the number of wealth.

Here are the lucky numbers for the week of February 7-13, 2014:

15, 21, 26, 35, 37, 44, 59, 60

The Seattle Seahawks Had an Edge - Yoga and Meditation

Football yogaSeahawks head coach Pete Carroll is a huge proponent of having his players work out their minds as well as their muscles and he encourages his players to meditate daily to improve their focus and attitude during games, according to abcnews.com. Carroll also makes yoga a regular component of the team's strength-training workouts, which also scores mind-body benefits, ABC News reported.

Did meditation give the Seahawks the edge? Research released this month in JAMA Internal Medicine reviewed previous studies and found that regular meditation offers relief from anxiety and help coping with pain. Other studies have shown that meditation jacks resilience and brings your brain to the present, rather than ruminating in the past.

Meditation has many benefits. According to Women's Heath Magazine, meditation helps with all of the following:

Brain
Research shows that meditation can increase alpha and theta brainwave activity, which is linked to relaxation. What's more, practicing meditation every day for two months can physically beef up some parts of your gray matter!

Mood
Slipping into a meditative state can light up the area of your noggin that controls complex thoughts and positive emotions. Some kinds of meditation can also build mental muscle in the brain's other hubs for compassion, empathy, and fear, allowing you greater mastery over your emotions and helping you feel closer to others.

Lungs and Heart
Meditation increases activity in your parasympathetic nervous system, which controls your rest-and-digest functions (the flip side of your fight-or-flight response). Reflexively, your lungs begin to draw deeper breaths. And your heart begins to beat more slowly, causing your blood vessels to relax. In fact, regular meditation can drop your blood pressure by up to four points, lowering your risk for heart disease.

Relaxation
Meanwhile, your adrenal glands dial back production of the stress hormone cortisol. And meditation increases blood flow to your brain, which may help lower anxiety. (The enhanced blood flow may also improve your memory.)

Willpower
It sounds too good to be true, but practicing daily meditation can lower your blood sugar levels (high ones can lead to diabetes) and may cut cravings for salty foods.

Immune System
One theory: Meditation helps nix the mental negativity that may dampen immune response. Another thought: Meditation can prompt your body to step up its antibody production. Whatever the biology, research shows meditators may be more able to fight off infections. They may also have better pain control when injured.
