Ask Madam Lichtenstein - Do Certain Tarot Decks Work Better Than Others?

Tarot reader 1Columbia, MD : What do you think of the variety of tarot decks out there? Do you think the various "flavors" of decks impact their usage?

Charlene Lichtenstein: Choosing a tarot deck is a very personal experience. I was taught to mediate upon the deck to get the greatest forecasting capability so I tend to avoid the most popular deck (Ryder) because I find the pictures too "editorial". I love all the different varieties - especially the "post modern" ones with very mystical meanings.

Horoscope for the Month of April 2014 and Week of March 31, 2014

Lady gagaThe Sun and Mercury conjunct Uranus as part of a Grand Cross with Jupiter, Mars and Pluto - and all six planets are in cardinal signs. April showers a heck of a lot of planetary energy into the cosmos. Will it be a rain or meteor shower? Pack an umbrella ... and a helmet.

ARIES   (MARCH 21 - APRIL 20)
Aries are shooting stars sitting right in the center of all the attention. You move in important circles and can press the flesh with notables. Great! Now what? Temper your enthusiasm and focus your efforts carefully and strategically. You could make an unforgettable first impression with some influential VIP. Hmm. Define what you mean by “unforgettable”.

TAURUS   (APRIL 21 - MAY 21)
There is so much going on behind the scenes this week that Taureans could be forgiven for not being able to focus their attention on any one important thing. But you need to cut through all the static and parse out what is noise and what is a secret warning signal. Go with your intuition before taking and sharp actions. You don’t want to poke yourself. Poke elsewhere.

GEMINI   (MAY 22 - JUNE 21)
Geminis are very sociable which is why this week might bring extra stress with certain friends. They insist on getting involved in areas that you would prefer to remain private. But no matter how hard you try to keep a lid on things, something or someone will make it pop open. Go with the flow and don’t get hung up on who said what and what said who. What? Who??

CANCER   (JUNE 22 - JULY 23)
If you are itching to change your professional life’s course, scratch that itch by taking a break from any decision making. You don’t want to upset the applecart at home before you have time to consider the impact of any major change. There is time to see how things play out, Cancer. Meanwhile, relax and play with an assortment of things. No names please.

LEO   (JULY 24 - AUGUST 23)
It will be hard to contain you as you seem to find any excuse to break out of your hum drum routine to let loose with any crazy new experiences. This is not a bad thing but be sure that you enjoy with purpose and not squander any opportunity to learn and expand your knowledge. Save it for a rainy day, Leo. Bring on those April showers!

VIRGO   (AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 23)
Lovers and their all encompassing seductive intensities will become a little too cloying and restrictive this week. While you love all those passionate tete a tetes, you may feel reined in and restricted. Be flexible and set boundaries for your time. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. I say, possibly. Do you dare give that a try, Virgo?

LIBRA   (SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23)
Expect a few surprises in your personal relationships, Libra. Not only will you find that certain folks are ready to push you in a direction that you would prefer not to take, they might also (surprisingly) have your best interests at heart and your success at hand. Hmm. Will you allow yourself to be led blindly on faith alone? Miracles do happen, you know.

SCORPIO   (OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 22)
If you have any nit picky detailed tasks on your “to do” list, why not try and tackle them now. But choose your jobs carefully and try to stay on track despite surprising detours. You can accomplish a lot by focusing, nonplussed, as the ground shifts and churns. Gather your forces of concentration Scorpio and you will rule the roost, if not the entire world.

SAGITTARIUS   (NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 22)
Outrageous fun is possible throughout the week. But you will need to know the limits of your party hearty abilities so that you don’t squander all of your energy on the lightest of light entertainments. There is a lot to pile on your plate so save some spare oomph for the biggest stuff, Sagittarius. The bigger the better ... with the exception of the monetary cost!

CAPRICORN   (DECEMBER 23 - JANUARY 20)
Capricorns are more focused on their domestic agenda and this means anything from a physical change within your home to an emotional change with certain relatives. Are you in a good place? Do you have a warm, inviting sanctuary? If you think you are ready for a spring cleaning, get to it. Reassess, renovate, decorate, congregate or even bloviate...?

AQUARIUS   (JANUARY 21 - FEBRUARY 19)
Aquarians love to hear themselves which can be good if you are thinking before you speak but not so good if you unthinkingly spout opinions right off the top of your head. You are compelling and charming and your words pack a punch. Aim them carefully, strategically and calmly. You might change the world faster than you change your mind. Uh oh.

PISCES   (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20)
Money could become a source of contention for you now especially if you have been cavalier about your budget and have been spending on whims. Partying around town with your needy pals may be great fun but it can also be wastefully expensive. Try to be a bit fiscally conservative and save something for a rainy day. No, April showers do not count, Pisces!

Lucky Numbers for the Week of March 28, 2014

Lottery ads tell us you only need a dollar and a dream. But it is also helpful to have a list of lucky numbers to help spur the good fortune ... or fortunes. So with that in mind, here are some lucky numbers that can be used in any helpful way. I gazed into a pool of water, Nostradamus-like, and contemplated the cosmos. Then I mixed the tarot cards and allowed the spirits to guide me to the cards that represent the lucky numbers for this week. Nothing is guaranteed but who knows ....?

I choose eight numbers because 8 is the number of wealth.

Here are the lucky numbers for the week of March 28-April 6, 2014:

2, 5, 27, 29, 33, 38, 41, 74

Don't Call My Broker. Call My Astrologer.

Financial astrologyBusinessWeek gives a pretty good assessment of the workings of the marketplace. But when it comes to business in Inida, the average financial trader seeks higher celestial advice than current price earning ratios. Many of india's traders consult astrologers.

As traders and fund managers in India hovered in offices listening for the Fed’s currency announcement last year, Atul Maheshwari, a financial astrologer, received so many calls, instant messages, and texts from his 130 clients that he gave up trying to help and shut off his phone. “People were in a frenzy. I just couldn’t answer everybody’s questions,” he says.

It was the second time in less than a month that the fortune teller, who works out of his apartment in a suburb 26 miles from Mumbai’s financial district, was overwhelmed by clients’ pleas for help. In late August, as the rupee plunged, he turned off his phone again. In much the same way astrologers in India are called on to plan weddings, bless new businesses, and choose children’s names, financial astrologers are called in when the rupee is fluctuating wildly, or when predictions for specific stocks and commodities are needed.

Calls to the 24-hour helpline run by GaneshaSpeaks.com, the country’s biggest astro-consultancy, tripled to 90 per day on average. “People were swearing and yelling as they lost money,” says Akshay Maradia, head of sales and marketing.

Dharmesh Girishchandra Joshi, lead financial astrologer for GaneshaSpeaks, uses the earth’s position in relation to the sun in calling gold prices and Saturn’s movements to predict steel stocks. Maheshwari links the moon to moods that can sway investor decisions. Jupiter has power over banks, and Mercury and Venus affect the rupee, according to price and planetary data he’s crunched.

The company has 1,200 subscribers to its forecasts: A three-month package costs 5,000 rupees ($80.15). Archit Maheshwari (no relation), a portfolio manager for wealthy investors at Far Asia Ventures, has consulted with financial astrologers for almost two years. “It is complementary to traditional market and technical analysis and a component in the [trading] decision,” he says. Initially a skeptic, he says he received “spot-on” advice from his astrologer about gold and the rupee. Such trust keeps the astrologers busy. “I’m constantly crunching market and planetary data,” Atul Maheshwari says. “As planets move, they tinker with levels of greed and fear among investors.”

Ask Madam Lichtenstein - What Do You Need For a Horoscope Reading?

Tarot reader 1Fairfax, VA: How much information do you need from an individual to be able to give a true reading of their horoscope?

Charlene Lichtenstein: The basic information needed to calculate a horoscope is a person's birthdate, birthtime and birthplace. From there we can calculate their natal chart (one's basic personality), progressions (one's rate of maturity) and transits (the impact of the current path of planets on a person's chart - some call this forecasting...)
