Cultivate Better Sleep Through Aromatherapy

PlantsHaving trouble sleeping or falling asleep? The AARP has some plant related remedies --

We’ve seen the science, so here’s the secret: You’ll rest easier with potted plants in your bedroom. There are studies by NASA, which has extensively researched how plants remove VOCs (volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde and benzene) from a space station.

There’s research done by a Japanese company to design gardens that clean the air in hospitals. And then there’s that nerdy kid who sealed cat poop into one container with plants, and moldy bread into another container with plants.

He found that, relative to control containers that had the yucky stuff but not the plants, airborne contaminants were greatly reduced hours later. We wouldn’t bother mention his study but his coauthor was a nurse practitioner who worked in dad’s allergy clinic, and the physician later shared the results with colleagues at the annual meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

Not only do certain houseplants help remove toxins, impart a feeling of calm and promote drowsiness, they’re also a Pinterest-pretty way to boost your boudoir style! Don’t you just love how the hanging plants, macramé and rattan planters and glass terrariums we all had in our first apartments are currently trending on Etsy? Cultivate these horticultural hacks and you can rest easy.

JASMINE

Researchers in Germany tested the scent of jasmine on lab mice and watched them curl up in a corner and chill. The plant affects the same key neurotransmitter that makes us mellow out after a dose of valium — and was found to be just as potent as psychotropic drugs in a clinical setting. Jasmine fragrance produces the molecular mechanism also triggered by barbituates to soothe, ease anxiety and promote sleep. Even better, let the fragrance of a potted jasmine waft through your bedroom tonight and you may avoid tomorrow’s afternoon slump.

VALERIAN

You’ve heard of swallowing this as a supplement or tea for restful sleep. Well, some Japanese neuroscientists learned that sniffing it helps too. While valerian is generally cultivated outside, follow these tips for green-thumbing it indoors.

ENGLISH IVY

Remember the kid, the moldy bread and the cat poop? Mold and pet feces are common household allergens, and English ivy is what cleared the air. Who can sleep when you’re sneezin’ and wheezin’? NASA scientists give it the nod, too. So if you want to nod off, let some English ivy trail down your nightstand.

GARDENIA

Five sleep researchers in Osaka. Twenty-one tossing and turning men. Six weeks. One compound derived from gardenias. Countless Zzzzzzzs. Zero side effects. You know what we love? This bedside-table perfect bonsai version from Harry and David.

LAVENDER

Of course, you knew this, because your mother kept lavender sachets in the drawer with her nightgowns. You want to sleep like a baby? Think lavender bouquet by the bed, essential oil on your pillow or added to your bedtime bath. Moms who bathed their babies in lavender smiled more, were less stressed and touched their babies more in the bath. The babies cried less, made more eye contact and had longer periods of deep sleep. Cortisol levels dropped in both moms and infants. Yes, please!

ALOE VERA

It vacuums up those VOCs while you catch your Zzzzs, say NASA scientists.

BOSTON FERN

Remember back in the '80s when yuppie watering holes were called "fern bars" because of this ubiquitous decoration? Turns out, this plant drinks up formaldehyde from the air. Here’s to your health.

SNAKE PLANT (MOTHER-IN-LAW’S TONGUE)

No green thumb? If you can’t keep this easy-care plant alive, you might as well give up and buy an air purifier.

If you don't have a green thumb, some of these scents are available through Aromatherapy kits too.

ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 20)
Aries on a tight budget can find that their fiscal outlook brightens as they rein in their more extravagant expenditures. So don’t borrow more than you can afford but also, don’t deprive yourself by scrimping on the small delights that life will offer you over the next few weeks. Of course they say that the best things in life are free, but who are those people anyway?

TAURUS (APRIL 21 - MAY 21)
Just when you thought that you could blend into the background and do your own thing than the world turns its attention to you. Taureans are in the center of the universe, with some surprising results. Try to maintain your poise and aplomb as you meet and greet some fairly important folks. Be sure to wear clean underwear, especially since you are dressed in cellophane.

GEMINI (MAY 22 - JUNE 21)
Your intimate secrets cannot be contained, Gemini, so don’t even try. Your best defense is a carefree attitude. Show them that you are unflappable. And then, once the dust has settled and attention turns elsewhere, you can figure out how to do what you want to do - more carefully next time. Your plans for world domination will not be detered! Heh. Heh.

CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 23)
Friends want to get on your act now, Cancer. So let them! The have some great ideas for fun, excitement and adventure. There will also be a few surprises folded into the mix. You find that your social calendar fills up as opportunities to meet new people increases. The challenge will be for you to decide which events merit your presence. Be choosy while you can be.

LEO (JULY 24 - AUGUST 23)
Do you envision yourself as the leader of the pack? Any pack! If so, this is the opportune time to make your big corporate move. Leos love the theater and excitement of wowing the crowds. Now you can hone your message to convince the power brokers and sway them to your way of thinking. Planning is essential. Know what you want before you get there.

VIRGO (AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 23)
Not only will your travel plans have an added bit of zest, there will also be some added, unexpected surprises. Whoops! Plans can change or luggage goes astray. Life remains interesting, Virgo. Go with the cosmic flow and see where you wash up ashore. It could be an enchanting island or a dump. But no matter what, you will make it into a paradise.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23)
Expect some ups and downs in your love life as the planets plant a few surprises in your lurid plans. Libras who try to balance too many admirers at once may get caught with their hands in the nookie jar. Thos who are too picky may not get picked themselves. My advice: keep your heart open and optimistic and give more than you get. The payoff will be big, big, big!

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 22)
Scorpios will have to keep an open mind in any relationship discussion. Partners may feel that they need more of you (or less...) but you may feel differently. Be diplomatic and caring and all will go well. For those looking for a change, anyone you meet now will be not only extra exciting but a bit electric. Will things light up or short circuit? Let’s just see.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 22)
Even though your work schedule is apt to change quickly and dramatically, you will manage to get a lot done now through sheer determination. So put on your work boots, Sagittarius and start to finally get things done. You may be surprised at how easy even tough tasks become. Or maybe it will seem that way as you delegate your way to success...

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 23 - JANUARY 20)
Find your inner artist and let them out, Capricorn. This is the time to expand your world view and create something wonderful, inventive and ground breaking. Okay, if you are not that inspired, at least plan a few zesty parties and invite a range of very interesting people. Who knows what can create a spark? It could be to your love life.

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 21 - FEBRUARY 19)
Even if you feel a little antsy this week, you may find yourself sticking closer to home than normal. So if you’re bored to distraction, find a bunch of home based projects that you can tackle. Family members may have a few surprising revelations to share with you. If so, don’t over react, Aquarius. Things can go from boiling hot to ice cold to luke warm in a flash.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20)
Pisces can be very introspective, quiet and thoughtful but it may be time to give a voice to your opinions. You find that even a small idea can grow into something huge. You have the eloquence to sway even the most skeptical listener and make things happen for you. Start with local outreach and start your movement. Make yourself heard. Loud. No louder!

Lucky Numbers for the Week of April 27, 2018

Lottery ads tell us you only need a dollar and a dream. But it is also helpful to have a list of lucky numbers to help spur the good fortune ... or fortunes. So with that in mind, here are some lucky numbers that can be used in any helpful way. I gazed into a pool of water, Nostradamus-like, and contemplated the cosmos. Then I mixed the tarot cards and allowed the spirits to guide me to the cards that represent the lucky numbers for this week. Nothing is guaranteed but who knows ....?

I choose eight numbers because 8 is the number of wealth.

Here are the lucky numbers for the week of April 27-May 3, 2018:

6, 13, 16, 32, 43, 46, 55, 80

There are many ways to delve into your own consciousness to find luck and intuition. Try reading Dream Power/Improve Your Luck (Super Strength Series) and see if your dreams give you any clues and premonitions. Here's a guide to the best books available this month

Signs of the Times
Sunday 29th April 2018 - 15.30-18.00 BST

Charles Harvey wrote that “the deeper significance and purpose of our own lives can only really be understood when seen in the context of the major cycles of which our lives are a particular expression.” (Astrological Journal, March/April 1982)

In this webinar we will explore the significance in our birth charts of the two major planetary conjunctions which occurred in the last century:  Uranus/Pluto and Uranus/Neptune.  We will also discuss the three planetary cycles currently in their final stages and due to renew in 2020:  Jupiter/Pluto, Saturn/Pluto and Jupiter/Saturn.

These cycles provide a valuable context for all our chart work and lend an astrological perspective to our understanding of the Baby Boomer generation, Generation X and the Millennials.

Seized from Within: Planetary Hijack
Sunday 6th May 2018 - 15.30-18.00 BST

Strength in a chart can turn to discomfort if one planet grows too dominant, seizing the psyche. A sensitive Moon can morph into an emotional Diva, a penetrating Mercury may leave little room for feeling; Mars can dominates as an abusive boss or parent. If one planet is overactive in our chart, another may stay minimally expressed, unable to give its full range of possibilities.  How do we deal with these power imbalances in the chart?  Planetary strengths and weaknesses don’t always take a predictable form. We will look more closely at traditional notions of strength, and how this may contribute to “renegade” chart patterns.  How do we bring aliveness to those parts of the chart that remain underdeveloped or underused?

Shawn Nygaard
Astrology, Psyche, and Imagination
Sunday 13th May 2018 - 15.30-18.00 BST

Following the path initiated by Jung, yet paving his own way, depth psychologist James Hillman devoted his life’s work to returning soul to psychology. In his Pulitzer-nominated book “Re-Visioning Psychology,” Hillman lays out his rigorously well-considered vision (or re-vision) of a psychology rooted in the imagination and the kind of imagining identified by Jung as the primary activity of the soul. As Hillman describes, “Fantasy-images are both the raw materials and finished products of psyche, and they are the privileged mode of access to knowledge of soul.”

This webinar explores the archetypal perspective in Hillman’s “Re-Visioning Psychology” as a natural complement to astrology, via the book’s four main sections: “Personifying or Imagining Things,” “Pathologizing or Falling Apart,” “Psychologizing or Seeing Through,” and, finally, “Dehumanizing or Soul-making.” Chart examples will help illustrate how these ideas connect to astrology, can enrich our astrological work, and offer a unique perspective rooted in the depths of the soul.

Uranus in Taurus: Awakening Venus
Sunday 10th June 2018 - 15.30-18.00 BST

When Uranus went into Aries in 2010-11, we certainly experienced an awakening of Mars energy – individually and collectively. Those who could express it became extremely active, in all sorts of positive – and negative – ways. Those who could not express their Mars energy became depressed or helplessly angry against "them." Now, with Uranus newly in Taurus we can expect to see Venus awakening in all the wonderful and uncomfortable ways we can imagine. Here we shall explore how we might experiment personally in navigating this new Venusian energy.

John Green
The Chart in a Nutshell
Sunday 17th June 2018 - 15.30-18.00 BST

One of the questions always asked when teaching astrology is ‘Where do I start in a chart?’ It’s an important question and one which has many answers. So how do we quickly get to the essence of the main themes and narratives of a chart? In this webinar we will explore ways to get into the natal chart quickly, see what the main points of importance are and, most importantly, how we then relate those ideas to the client.

Helen Sewell
The Astrological Ages and Shifts in Human Consciousness
Sunday 1st July 2018 - 15.30-18.00 BST

Some astrologers believe we are living on the cusp between the Ages of Pisces and Aquarius, a potentially illuminating subject which is not always given the consideration it deserves. Carl Jung recognised the importance of the ages and the tumultuous changes that they herald. When there is the death of something a deep collective anxiety pervades society. Many of us feel this right now as we’re faced with an unknown future where our old familiar attitudes, beliefs, structures and mores are crumbling. As a species we don’t like change and we may well be dragged kicking and screaming into the Age of Aquarius.

This webinar looks at the synchronicity between myth, history, religion, and the evolution of humankind over the past astrological ages, and looks at the compasses which might help us through these shifts. Some planets are happier than others in specific ages; for instance, Mars has struggled to live out its true essence in the sign of Pisces.

Carl Jung was not very optimistic about the prospect for humanity in the coming Age of Aquarius, but this webinar presents a case that has rather more faith in the generations to come.

Just a reminder that this year's Liz Greene live webinars are also ongoing!

Let’s take a clear look at our surroundings, personal missions and projects to see what needs to be done. We are elected to be the ones who do it. So let's get moving!

ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 20)
Aries are juiced with a lemony zing as many of their financial planning projects sudden begin to pay off. The fates find a way to reward you for all of your past, careful planning. Have you been generous or stingy? If your deeds fall short, don’t panic; it is never too late to make good on all well intended half promises. That is if they are well intended. Ahem...

TAURUS (APRIL 21 - MAY 21)
There is no stopping you now, Taurus. You are a busy bee whose presence seems to be demanded at every major social event. So take flight and create a buzz. See and be seen to make that first amazing and unforgettable impression. You may also crave a new wardrobe “look.” But the question is, what goes with neon spandex and plaid suspenders?

GEMINI (MAY 22 - JUNE 21)
Geminis may have a few hidden surprises up their sleeves as their intuition is right on target. Focus on your ultimate prize and find secretive ways to achieve it. Along the way, you will find that generosity is key, whether it is your money or your time. There are people, movements or organizations that can use your wise advice. But as the wise old owl said, “Who?”

CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 23)
What is it about friendships now that makes your heart aflutter? Cancers become so overly sentimental that it can change certain platonic dynamics. You may consider changing the nature of one relationship to something more intense and passionate. Thank goodness the fates deliver a burst of reality that jostles your cloud. Think first, act second.

LEO (JULY 24 - AUGUST 23)
Leos work overtime in their career to pursue the pot of corporate gold. But try to mix a little pleasure with your business so burning the midnight oil won’t seem so burdensome. Shortcuts are possible if you can discern the underlying political rules so as to make all of your hard efforts count. There will be time to change the rules when you rule, you ruler you.

VIRGO (AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 23)
You have room to roam and experience life at its fullest now, Virgo. Get out of your humdrum. You may be travelling more than usual and should leave yourself open for adventure and possible love connections wherever you are. It could be a wildly romantic trip to the moon on gossamer wings. If so, chalk it up to just one of those delicious, short burst type of things.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23)
Plan for a personal sexual heat wave now. Libras seem to attract anyone they want ... and even a few folks who they don’t necessarily want. How much hot sauce can you handle now, lover? Get ready - The cosmos places you in the center of the party. Libras should make the most of this zesty energy while they are in peak form. Or is it in peek form...?

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 22)
No self respecting Scorpio should be sitting home alone this week. You are given clear sailing to seek your shipshape shipmate or to navigate a current relationship into deeper waters. It’s a great time so shower your intended with attention, affection and lots of frivolous goodies. A set of keys to the weekend house couldn’t hurt either.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 22)
Prepare for the unexpected now as work projects may build to a level where you need a helping hand. When that happens , you are happy to discover that you have many more fans and admirers than you first thought. Hang around the coffee machine more often, Sagittarius and catch a bit of stray idle gossip ... or is it a piece of an idle gossiper?

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 23 - JANUARY 20)
Capricorns are thrust into party hearty central so gather your posse and become a social force with whom to be reckoned. You might also be inspired to try something creative and artistic. Who knows where your imagination will take you? Will you go down the road to reckless dissipation and excess or glorious genius? Which path will you choose? Oh let’s guess...

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 21 - FEBRUARY 19)
This is the perfect time to invite a few friendly folks over and entertain at home. Cocoon and relax this week. Aquarians are tempted to seek stronger connections. And speaking of connections, this may not be a bad time to reconnect with family. Who knows what can happen when a bunch of you get together? Things can go from bananas to roses.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20)
Eloquence is your middle name now Pisces. So pour on your charm and overflow. You also have a nifty way with words now that can get people from across the political spectrum to agree with your ideas. So why waste this sweet diplomatic riff on sour complaints and carping? Remember that you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Chocolate works even better.
