Body Fat and Chocolate As Alternatives to Foreign Oil?

Businessweek just reported on unusual sources of fuel and energy - often from some surprising sources. In fact, there could be money in those used baby diapers and urine. Here are some of the most recent discoveries:

Chocolate - not your delicious candy bars but chocolate waste. Scientists in England developed a racing car that uses fuel made from chocolate waste.

Dirty Diapers - A plant in Canada can break down diapers and their metane-potential filled contents and can turn them into oil and methane fuel.

Turkeys - using the unused parts of a turkey, a US based plant can make diesel fuel.

Human Fat - Arguably my favorite - a California based liposuction surgeon used the fat from his patients to make lipodiesel fuel for his car.

Urine - It is possible to convert urine into hydrogen as they are now doing in Ohio. The problem is getting enough urine. Drink up everyone!

Beef By-Products - The Heartland Flyer rail carries passengers between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth using biodiesel blend of 20% beef byproducts. Better than getting these parts in your hotdogs....

Coffee - Coffee grounds actually have an abundant source of biofuel. In Reno they can separate the oil from the grounds and it even smells great.

Cow Manure - On the other end of the smell scale, in Vermont they are using cow manure to make methane to fire generators.

How Does Solar Power Work?

What is solar power ?

Solar power is radiant energy that's produced by the sun. Every single day the sun radiates, or sends out, an immense quantity of energy. The sun radiates more energy in a second than people have used since the beginning of time! The energy of the Sun derives from within the sun itself.

Like other stars, the sun is really a big ball of gases––mostly hydrogen and helium atoms. The hydrogen atoms in the sun’s core combine to form helium and generate energy in a process called nuclear fusion. During nuclear fusion, the sun’s extremely high pressure and temperature cause hydrogen atoms to come apart and their nuclei (the central cores of the atoms) to fuse or combine. Four hydrogen nuclei fuse to become one helium atom. But the helium atom contains less mass compared to four hydrogen atoms that fused.

Some matter is lost during nuclear fusion. The lost matter is emitted into space as radiant energy. It takes millions of years for the energy in the sun’s core to make its way to the solar surface, after which slightly over eight minutes to travel the 93 million miles to earth. The solar energy travels to the earth at a speed of 186,000 miles per second, the velocity of sunshine.

Only a small percentage of the power radiated from the sun into space strikes the earth, one part in two billion. Yet this amount of energy is enormous. Every day enough energy strikes the United States to provide the nation’s energy needs for one and a half years!

Where does all this energy go? About 15 percent of the sun’s energy which hits the planet earth is reflected back into space. Another 30 percent is used to evaporate water, which, lifted into the atmosphere, produces rainfall. Solar power is absorbed by plants, the land, and the oceans. The rest could be used to supply our energy needs.

Who invented solar technology ?

Humans have harnessed solar technology for hundreds of years. Since the 7th century B.C., people used simple magnifying glasses to concentrate the light of the sun into beams so hot they'd cause wood to catch fire. More than 100 years ago in France, a scientist used heat from a solar collector to create steam to drive a steam engine. In the beginning of this century, scientists and engineers began researching ways to use solar technology in earnest.

One important development was a remarkably efficient solar boiler invented by Charles Greeley Abbott, an American astrophysicist, in 1936. The solar water heater came into common use at this time in Florida, California, and the Southwest. The industry started in the early 1920s and was in full swing just before WW II. This growth lasted prior to the mid-1950s when low-cost natural gas took over as primary fuel for heating American homes.

People and world governments remained largely indifferent to the possibilities of solar energy until the oil shortages of the 1970s. Today, people use solar power to heat buildings and water and to generate electricity.

How do we use solar power today ?

There are two standard forms of solar energy: 

Solar thermal energy collects the sun's warmth through 1 of 2 means: in water or in an anti-freeze (glycol) mixture. 

Solar photovoltaic energy converts the sun's radiation to usable electricity.

Here are the five most practical and popular techniques solar energy is employed:

1. Small portable solar photovoltaic systems. We see these used everywhere, from calculators to solar garden tools. Portable units can be utilized for everything from RV appliances while single panel systems are used for traffic signs and remote monitoring stations.

2. Solar pool heating. Running water in direct circulation systems through a solar collector is an extremely practical method to heat water for your pool or spa.

3. Thermal glycol energy to heat water. In this method (indirect circulation), glycol is heated by natural sunlight and the heat is then transferred to water in a hot water tank. Using this method of collecting the sun's energy is much more practical now than ever. In areas as far north as Edmonton, Alberta, solar thermal to heat water is economically sound. It can pay for itself in 3 years or less.

4. Integrating solar photovoltaic energy into your home or office power. In most parts of the world, solar photovoltaics is an economically feasible approach to supplement the power of your home. In Japan, photovoltaics are competitive with other forms of power. In the USA, new incentive programs make this form of solar technology ever more viable in many states. A frequent and practical way of integrating solar energy into the power of your home or business is through the usage of building integrated solar photovoltaics.

5. Large independent photovoltaic systems. When you have enough sun power at your site, you may be able to go off grid. It's also possible to integrate or hybridize your solar power system with wind power or other kinds of renewable power to stay 'off the grid.'

How do Photovoltaic panels work ?

Silicon is mounted beneath non-reflective glass to produce photovoltaic panels. These panels collect photons from the sun, converting them into DC electrical energy. The energy created then flows into an inverter. The inverter transforms the energy into basic voltage and AC electrical power. Solar cells are prepared with particular materials called semiconductors for example silicon, which is presently the most generally used.

When light hits the Photovoltaic cell, a specific share of it is absorbed inside the semiconductor material. This means that the energy of the absorbed light is given to the semiconductor. The energy unfastens the electrons, permitting them to run freely. Pv cells also have one or more electric fields that act to compel electrons unfastened by light absorption to flow in a specific direction. This flow of electrons is a current, and by introducing metal links on the top and bottom of the -Photovoltaic cell, the current can be drawn to use it externally.

- Heating our homes with oil or natural gas or using electricity from power plants running with coal and oil is a cause of global warming and climate disruption. Solar power, on the contrary, is clean and environmentally-friendly.

- Solar hot-water heaters require little maintenance, and their initial investment could be recovered in just a relatively short time.

- Solar hot-water heaters can work in nearly every climate, even just in very cold ones. You just need to choose the best system for your climate: drainback, thermosyphon, batch-ICS, etc.

- Maintenance costs of solar powered systems are minimal and the warranties large.

- Financial incentives (USA, Canada, European states…) can help to eliminate the cost of the first investment in solar technologies. The U.S. government, for example, offers tax credits for solar systems certified by by the SRCC (Solar Rating and Certification Corporation), which amount to 30 percent of the investment (2009-2016 period).

Solar Cons Arguments

- The initial investment in Solar Hot water heaters or in Photovoltaic Electric Systems is greater than that required by conventional electric and gas heaters systems.

- The payback period of solar PV-electric systems is high, as well as those of solar space heating or solar cooling (only the solar hot water heating payback is short or relatively short).

- Solar water heating do not support a direct in conjunction with radiators (including baseboard ones). - Some air con (solar space heating and the solar cooling systems) are costly, and rather untested technologies: solar air conditioning isn't, till now, a truly economical option.

- The efficiency of solar powered systems is rather dependent on sunlight resources. It's in colder climates, where heating or electricity needs are higher, that the efficiency is smaller.

New Green Candy Wrappers Encourage Littering

Just as there is ecological wrapping paper that contains seeds so when you toss it away it decomposes, plants the seeds and roots into beautiful flowers so why not that same with candy wrappers?

Two new candies are now packaged in materials that are not just bio-degradable, they also grow into (what else) Candytuft plants. So now you can happily toss your used candy wrappers in your home garden or compost pile. The two new candies are -

Ananda dark chocolate bars from Amigos International replaces the foil wrappers that typically cover chocolate with compostable NatureFlex NK material. The NK material is a clear film that keeps out moisture and is made from wood pulp cellulose. It meets European and American standards for composting in home and industrial settings. Also - The boxes for the chocolate bars are printed with vegetable-based inks and are made with fiber. And the bars themselves are organic.

Candytuft U.K. chain Marks & Spencer is using packaging infused with seeds for Candytuft plants which attract butterflies and will grow within a few weeks of putting the wrapping in the soil. The retailer will start selling the candies this month for Mother's Day and include instructions on the best way to plant the packaging.

The Doctor Prescribes Honey and Cinnamon

I get a ton of mail everyday but sometimes a piece of junk mail stops me in my trashing tracks. "Harness the Amazing Power of Honey", the flyer from FC&A Medical Publishing said. I know that honey never spoils, has been around forever and is sweet. But aside from that, I never gave it much thought. So I began to investigate....

Honey Well what I found is that honey is amazing and so is cinnamon. According to 1stHolistic health site, both honey and cinnamon have a range of medicinal values. Here are a few of them from the site from heart disease to hair loss:



HEART DISEASE:

Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply on bread, chappati, or other bread, instead of jelly and jam and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also those who already had an attack, if they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heartbeat. 

ARTHRITIS:

Take one part honey to two parts of lukewarm water and add a small teaspoon of cinnamon powder, make a paste and massage it on the itching part of the body slowly. It is noticed that the pain recedes within a minute or two. Arthritis patients may take daily, morning and night, one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. If taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured.

HAIR LOSS:

Those suffering from hair loss or baldness, may apply a paste of hot olive oil, one tablespoon of honey, one teaspoon of cinnamon powder before bath and keep it for approx. 15 min. and then wash the hair. It was found to be effective even if kept on for 5 minutes.

BLADDER INFECTIONS:

Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder.

CHOLESTEROL:

Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, given to a cholesterol patient, was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10% within 2 hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, if taken 3 times a day, any chronic cholesterol is cured. As per information received in the said journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complains of cholesterol.

COLDS:

Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for 3 days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold and clear the sinuses.

INFERTILITY:

Yunani and Ayurvedic Medicine have been using honey for thousands of years to strengthen the semen of men. If impotent men regularly take two tablespoon of honey before going to sleep, their problem will be solved.  In China, Japan and Far-East countries, women, who do not conceive and need to strengthen the uterus, have been taking cinnamon powder for centuries. Women who cannot conceive may take a pinch of cinnamon powder in half teaspoon of honey and apply it on the gums frequently throughout the day, so that it slowly mixes with the saliva and enters the body. 

UPSET STOMACH and GAS:

Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from the root. According to the studies done in India & Japan, it is revealed that if honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas. 

IMMUNE SYSTEM:

Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacteria and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight bacteria and viral diseases.

LONGEVITY:

Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly arrests the ravages of old age. Take 4 spoons of honey, 1 spoon of cinnamon powder and 3 cups of water and boil to make like tea. Drink 1/4cup, 3 to 4 times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age. Life spans also increases and even a 100 years old, starts performing the chores of a 20-year-old.

SKIN - PIMPLES and INFECTIONS:

Three tablespoons of Honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it next morning with warm water. If done daily for two weeks, it removes pimples from the root. Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin infections.

WEIGHT LOSS:

Daily in the morning 1/2hour before breakfast on an empty stomach and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one-cup water. If taken regularly it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also drinking of this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.

FATIGUE:

Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens, who take honey and cinnamon power in equal parts, are more alert and flexible. Dr. Milton who has done research says that half tablespoon honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3.00 p.m. when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, increases the vitality of the body within a week.

HEARING LOSS:

Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder taken in equal parts restore hearing.
