Looking Back at New York City Weather: April 28

Today in New York Weather History: April 17

1918 (Wednesday)

This was the third day in a row with a high of 74° (fourteen degrees above average).  These warm days came less than a week after three unseasonably cold days, with highs of 38°, 35°, and 42° (twenty degrees below average).

1976 (Saturday)

Today was the beginning of a four-day heat wave in which high temperatures averaged 31 degrees above average: 91° (today)-96°-92°-89°.  This was unprecedented for so early in the year, until 2002 , when there was another nearly identical heat wave from April 16-19.

1980 (Thursday)

The morning low was 32°, thirteen degrees colder than average, and one of the latest dates in Central Park for a last frost.  (The typical date is April 1.)

1984 (Tuesday)

After three damp and chilly days, today was sunny and pleasant, with a high of 67°.  It was great weather for the home opener for the Mets but, unfortunately, the sunshine didn't inspire them, as they were walloped by Montreal 10-0.

1986 (Thursday)

Rain that began the night of April 15 continued through mid-afternoon today.  Total rainfall was 2.78", with the bulk falling yesterday (1.91").

2002 (Wednesday)

Today's high was a sizzling 96°, tying April 18, 1976 as New York's hottest day on record in April.  Today's high temperature was 35 degrees above average, one of the greatest departures on record.  Furthermore, this morning's low of 74° was the earliest date on record for a low in the 70s (later broken in 2023 on 4/14).

2003 (Thursday)

After a back-door cold front dropped yesterday's temperature from a summery 88° to 51°, today's temperature fell slowly throughout the day and was down to 36° by midnight.

2005 (Sunday)

After a low of 42°, the temperature recovered to 77°.

2012 (Tuesday)

For the 15th day in a row, no precipitation fell.  This would be the longest dry spell of 2012, and was the longest since Aug./Sept. 2010, when there was a rain-free streak of seventeen days.

2013 (Wednesday)

This was the 18th day in a row in which no high temperature was duplicated.  During these days, high temperatures ranged from 43° to 82°.

2022 (Sunday)

With a high/low of 51°/41°, this was the chilliest Easter Sunday since 2009 (49°/36°).  This followed five consecutive days with highs in the 70s.   And similar to last Easter, today's air was quite dry, with humidity bottoming out at 25% during mid-afternoon.
