Looking Back at New York Weather: June 27
1932 (Monday)
On a sweltering day (high of 90°, heat index of 100°) strong thunderstorms moved through between 4 PM and midnight, dumping 2.11" of rain, most of which fell in the two hours between 8-10:00.
1966 (Monday)
Today, with a high of 101°, was only the third, and last, time a high in the triple digits occurred in June (through 2024). The other occurrences were on June 26, 1952 (100°) and June 29, 1934 (101°). This was the first of sixteen days with highs of 90° or hotter in the next eighteen days. (Yesterday's high was a comfortable 82°.)
1976 (Sunday)
This was the first Gay Pride Day in which the temperature hit 90°. There have since been seven other parades marched in 90-degree weather (the last was in 2021).
1980 (Friday)
Today's high was 94°, the only 90-degree day this month, and it came five weeks after the previous 90-degree day. (July and August, however, would have twenty-six days of 90+.)
1981 (Saturday)
This morning's low of 58° was just the second low in the 50s this month, tying June 1899, 1937 and 1939 for fewest number of days with a low cooler than 60°. (Later broken in 2024 when there would be just one low below 60°; the average number is ten.)
1992 (Saturday)
Each of the past five days had afternoon highs that were progressively warmer by one degree: 76° on June 23; 77° the next day; 78° on June 25; 79° yesterday; and 80° today.
2010 (Sunday)
It was a hot and sticky Gay Pride Day, with a high of 91°. And for the seventh of the past eight days the morning low was 71°. (For more weather highlights from past Gay Pride Days, click here.)
2020 (Saturday)
A 15-day streak with no measurable rain ended today when 0.09" of rain fell in the early afternoon. (This was the longest such streak since one of 18 days in the fall of 2017.) And a 7-day streak with highs of 85° or warmer (the longest since a 10-day streak in June 2010) ended when the high, due to clouds and showers, got no higher than 80°. Despite the slightly cooler temperatures, the dew point in the middle of the afternoon reached an uncomfortable 73°.
2021 (Sunday)
For the second year in a row (a first), the high reached 90° on Pride Sunday. And with an afternoon dew point in the 70°-71° range, the heat index reached 96°. Skies were a mix of sun and clouds, which cleared as evening approached.
2024 (Thursday)
The 0.23" of rain that fell between 1:00 and 3 :00 AM was the same amount that fell on this date 100 years ago. However, in 1924 the rain fell between 8:45 AM and 4:15 PM and the high/low was much cooler (69°/59° vs. this year's 84°/67°).
Also, the 58 degrees in 1981 was the lowest temperature for the month, tieing 1911 and 1952 for the highest "lowest temperature for June".
