Today in New York Weather History: July 23

1906 (Monday)

Despite a sultry low of 80° today's high failed to reach 90°, peaking at 87°.  This was the first of only two instances in which a low this warm was followed by a high that stayed in the 80s. (The other would occur two summers later.)

1919 (Wednesday)

For the ninth day in a row measurable rain fell.  Total rainfall during this streak amounted to 5.81", one-third more than what falls in a typical July.  Today's rainfall amounted to 0.68" (four other days during this streak saw more).

1939 (Sunday)

With a high/low of 89°/59°, today was the ninth day this year with a diurnal variation of 30 degrees or more, the most of any year (until 1994, which would have ten such days).

1953 (Thursday)

Heavy rain that fell in the morning hours between 8 AM and 1 PM amounted to 2.41", breaking the previous record amount for the date, from 1938, by 0.01".

1978  (Sunday)

Today would be the hottest day of the year, with a high/low of 95°/81° (eleven degrees above average).  The morning low was the first in the 80s since 1957.

Hot

1991 (Tuesday)

Today was the sixth day in the past seven in which the high temperature was 96° or hotter (the exception was yesterday's 89°).  After a high of 99° today, a thunderstorm between 5-7 PM dropped half an inch of rain.

1993 (Friday)

Seven of the past eight days had morning lows of either 65° or 66°, four degrees below average.

2004 (Friday)

2.32" of rain fell today, with three especially heavy one-hour downpours: 0.57" poured down between 11 AM-noon; 0.50" from 4-5 PM (including 0.31" during one five-minute period); and 0.40" between 10-11 PM.

2007 (Monday)

In the past four weeks daily rainfalls of one-inch+ occurred each week.  Today, 2.31" of rain fell, with most of it (1.91") falling between 8 AM-1 PM.  (This was the fifth time more than two inches of rain fell on this date.)  Because of the rainy conditions the high made it to just 72°, thirteen degrees cooler than average.

2008 (Wednesday)

0.76" of rain fell in an hour (11:30 PM-12:30 AM) and 0.34" in a five-minute period during that hour.

2010 (Friday)

This was the ninth year in a row that rain fell on this date; this year, 0.70" was measured in Central Park.  And almost all of the day's rain fell in a brief period of time, as a thunderstorm shortly before 9 PM dumped 0.34" of rain in just five minutes' time and 0.60" in 15 minutes.  During the evening, the dew point was in the very uncomfortable mid-70s.

2011 (Saturday)

Although the sky was lightly overcast during the afternoon, the temperature soared to 100°, a record for the date.  However, this was four degrees "cooler" than yesterday.  Despite the cloud cover, no rain fell - the first rain-free July 23 since 2001.

2012 (Monday)

Rain fell on this date for the tenth time in the past eleven years.  Showers in mid-afternoon and evening produced 0.15".

2014 (Wednesday)

0.19" of rain fell during a thunderstorm shortly after 9 PM, making this the twelfth year of the past fifteen to pick up measurable rain on this date.  Today was also the eighth day this month with a low of 72°, tying July 2005 for having the most occurrences of a low temperature in one month (in the years since 1980).  July 2005 had eight days with a low of 71°.

2016 (Saturday)

The high/low of 96°/80° made this the hottest day of the year (until Aug. 13, when the high/low was 96°/81°).  However, because the humidity was low (around 30% in mid-afternoon) the "feels like" temperature was a few degrees lower than the air temperature.

2019 (Tuesday)

After a deluge of 1.66" yesterday evening, another period of rain that ended shortly after daybreak brought an additional 0.53".  This evening/morning rain event produced 2.19", which was similar in amount to the one that soaked the City on 7/17-18 (2.33").  What made them different, however, is that last week's was from the remnants of tropical system Barry, while yesterday and today's was produced by a cooler air mass moving into the area.  The combined amount of these two big rain producers was comparable to a month's worth of rain and followed a three-week period that had less than an inch of rain (6/26-7/16).  After a four-day heat wave, today's high was a refreshing 74°, eleven degrees below average and the coolest high in five weeks.

2021 (Friday)

Although just 0.01" of rain fell, this was the sixteenth year of the past twenty to have measurable rain on this date.

2023 (Sunday)

Low temperatures today and the past three days: 69° (today)-70°-71°-72° (7/20).  This was just the third day this month with a low cooler than 70° (average number is 15).  Finally, today had the seventh high of 88° this month, the most of any July (going back more than 100 years).

this should be one of the most likely dates with rain. since 1980, rain has fallen on this date in more than half of the years (58% to be exact). this year is 1 of the years (0.06").

Rob

Yes, it's tied with April 1 as the day with the most measurable precipitation in the years since 1980. However, it falls to sixth in the years since 1970 and 1960 (June 3 is #1 in both periods), and in the years since 1872 it's in a ten-way tie for thirteenth place (July 29 is ranked first). So, while 58% of the July 23's since 1980 have had measurable rain, before 1980 the percentage was only 35%.
