Triple-Digit Heat in New York City: A History

Today in New York Weather History: July 7

1908 (Tuesday)

This morning's low was a stifling 84°, close to the average high in mid-July, and the warmest low reading on record.  And another 84° low would occur in mid-August.  87 years later this reading was reached again (and once more in 2011).  Despite such a warm start the highs on both days this summer reached just 93°.

1960 (Thursday)

July 1960 became the only July (through 2024) in which every high temperature during the first week of the month was below 80°.  Averaging 76°, this was seven degrees below average.  The average high for the rest of the month would be 84°, with just three highs in the 70s.

1980 (Monday)

The morning low of 61° was the coolest reading of the month.  It was also the first time since July 1971 that the coolest reading in July didn't fall into the 50s.

1984 (Saturday)

Just one week after a rainstorm dumped 3.07" the area was flooded by another three-inch deluge (3.13"), all of which fell between 3-11 AM.  At its heaviest, 0.75" fell in a 30-minute period (6:15-6:45 AM).  This was a record-setting rainfall for the date.

1986 (Monday)

For the second day in a row the high hit 98°.  However, today's low of 70° was five degrees "cooler" than yesterday's.

1993 (Wednesday)

The afternoon high was a blazing 98° and was the first of ten days in a row with highs of 90+ (the next three days would all see highs in the triple digits.)

1994 (Thursday)

One year after a high of 98° today's high hit 97°.  However, this year's low of 76° was one degree warmer than last year's so both days had the same daily mean temperature.

2010 (Wednesday)

This was the second day in a row with record-setting triple-digit heat as the mercury climbed to 100°.

2012 (Saturday)

Today's high hit 97° at 12:30 PM.  It might have risen to 100° it weren't for light overcast that moved in during early afternoon as thunderstorms passed to the north.  This was the tenth day in a row with a high of 88° or hotter (tomorrow would be the eleventh).  During these days the average high was 92°.

2014 (Monday)

For the fifth year in a row the high reached the 90s on this date.  This year, the high was 90°, which was the "coolest" of the five years: (100°-92°-97°-92°-90°).

2015 (Tuesday)

Conditions were very tropical as high humidity and a high temperature of 88° produced a heat index of 95° during the afternoon.  Today's high was the warmest reading in two weeks.

2017 (Friday)

Today had the fourth short-duration (2-3 hours) downpour of one-inch+ in the past three weeks.  The 1.49" that fell this morning, from about 10:15 until noon, was the greatest amount of these four rainstorms.

Since writing your comment we had another downpour from 9-9:30 PM, bringing the day's total to 1.78", making this the second rainiest 7/7 on record. Here are a few other rainfall stats: 1) This was the 12th day this year with an inch or more of precipitation, which is the average number for an entire year; 2) this is the second rainiest first week of July in the past 30 years (2.92" fell during the first week of 2014); and 3) the 30" of precipitation that's fallen so far this year is 50% more than the amount that had fallen by this date last year (19.96").
