Today in New York Weather History: July 8
1971 (Thursday)
With a high/low of 96°/76°, today would be the hottest day of the year.
1982 (Thursday)
Today was the first day of the year with a high in the 90s (93°), the latest date for this occurrence since 1960 - and one of the latest on record (1985's would be even later). Typically, New York's first reading in the 90s occurs at the end of May. There would be 10 more days in the 90s this month and then no more for the rest of the year.
1987 (Wednesday)
During a pre-dawn thunderstorm, 0.30" of rain fell in the 15 minutes between 3:55-4:10 AM.
1993 (Thursday)
Today's high was a record-setting 100°. The next day's high would reach 101°, followed by 102° the day after that. This was just the second time the City suffered through three days in a row in the triple digits; the first occurred in 1948, from Aug. 26 to 28 (103°-101°-100°).
2005 (Friday)
Two days after 1.52" of rain fell, close to the same amount fell today (1.46"). And whereas most of the rain on the 6th fell in an hour (1-2 AM), today's rain fell throughout the day (3 AM-8 PM). These two rainstorms accounted for most of the month's 3.36" of rainfall.
2009 (Wednesday)
The day's low of 58° was the last time July had a low in the 50s until 2021 (when a low of 59° was reported on 7/3).
2012 (Sunday)
Although it paled in comparison to the string of triple-digit days in DC, the Carolinas and the Midwest, today was New York's eleventh day in a row with a high temperature of 88° or hotter (the last five days were in the 90s). The last time this happened was in 1999 (all days then were in the 90s); the last time there was a longer streak was in the summer of 1995, when it stretched to twelve days. Average high during this summer's streak was 92°.
2015 (Wednesday)
It was one of those rare days when the afternoon high failed to reach 90° despite a low temperature in the upper 70s. Today's high of 88° was the eighth day this year with a high of either 88° or 89° (with 12 more to come).
2021 (Thursday)
After sunshine predominated through early afternoon, 2.27" of rain flooded the City between 4:30-7 PM, setting a rainfall record for the date (the previous record was from 1899). Much of the rain fell during a severe thunderstorm that produced torrential rain during the evening rush hour, dumping 1.56" between 5-6 PM.
NYC was the bullseye for this rain event, as the area's three major airports had much less, with LaGuardia reporting 0.95", JFK getting 0.32", and Newark seeing just 0.09". Today's rain was the greatest daily amount to fall in Central Park since July 10 of last year, when 2.54" was measured as tropical storm Fay passed by (also a record amount).
2024 (Monday)
With a high of 95°, this was the tenth high temperature in the 90s so far this summer (all occurring since 6/20), joining eighteen other summers with ten or more by 7/8 (since 1869). Two other summers which had their 10th high of 90+ on this date, 1993 and 1944, ended up with 39 and 37 readings of 90+ in total, respectively (1993's total is the most on record, tied with 1991).
FYI, the summer of 1925 had ten 90+ highs the earliest, by 6/15 (with only seven more thereafter). And the most by 7/8 is 16, in 1966 and 1991 (finishing with 35 and 39, respectively).
well what do you know, the average high/low for 7/8 is 84/69 and the actual high/low for 7/8 this year, 84/69! very rare to have both the actual daily high and low exactly be on par with the average high and low for the date. this is the second time this year the high/low for the day was 84°/69°. the other day was June 14.
