has October ever had a monthly average mean temperature that was warmer than September’s monthly average mean temperature? if so, when did this happen? but if not, when was the closest that this came to happening?

No, there has never been an October that was milder than the preceding September. The closest any October came was in 1963, when it was 1.3 degrees cooler than September. At the time this was the 3rd mildest October (now tied for 7th place), and the 5th chilliest September (still ranked 5th).

June 1967, June 1992 and October 2021 are in a three way tie to have the most daily low temps of 61° of any individual calendar month on record (with seven) … and four other months have had six such lows.
