Looking Back at New York Weather: May 22

The 0.10" of rain that fell this afternoon was the first on this date since 1970.  It was also a chilly day, seven degrees below average, with a high/low of 60°/53°.

This was the 21st consecutive day in which no high temperature was duplicated.  During this three-week period highs ranged between 53° and 86°, with six days well above average and five days well below average.

Today's high of 93° was the first 90-degree day of the year, twenty degrees hotter than average.  However, it was bearable because the humidity was very low (and the morning low was a comfortable 60°).  Eight more 90-degree days would follow through late August, half the usual number of hot days.

Although the light showers that fell in the afternoon produced just 0.05" of rain, it was the first rain to fall on this date in 14 years.

The 1.64" of rain that fell in the past two days (1.40" on 5/21, 0.24" this morning), brought the month's total precipitation over four inches, making this the wettest month since October 2011, when six inches was measured.

1943 - this was the seventeenth day in a row in which either a trace of rain or a measurable amount (0.01" or more) of it fell. this was the longest such streak on record, a record that still stands. A trace of rain fell on seven of the days and the rain on the other ten days amounted to 4.08", which accounted for all but 0.96" of the month's precipitation.
