1975 Weather Highlights for New York

 

 

JANUARY

21 - This morning's low of 15° was the coldest reading of the winter.  Only one winter since 1960 has had a milder temperature for its coldest reading (20°, winter of 2002). However, based on the mean temperature (average of high and low), two days in February were colder. 

 

FEBRUARY

4 - Although it wasn't the coldest day of the winter (see below),  today had the coldest high temperature, 27°.

5 - 2.7" of snow fell during the morning.  The temperature held steady at 33° from 10 AM until 7 AM the next day. 

10 - Although Jan. 21 had the coldest reading of the winter (15°), today was the coldest day based on the mean temperature, with a high/low of 28°/16°.

12 - A quick-moving winter storm delivered the biggest snowfall of the winter, with 7.8" falling mostly between 9 AM-2 PM.

 

MARCH

14 - The winter's last measurable snow fell this afternoon.  0.3" was measured, with much of the precipitation falling as sleet.

 

APRIL

8 - Today, with a chilly high/low of 47°/31°, was the fifth day in a row with a mean temperature 10 degrees or more colder than average.  As a whole, these five days were 13 degrees below average.  Today was also the home opener for the Mets.

11 - A nice day for the Yankees' home opener.  Although it was chillier than average, with afternoon temperatures in the mid-50s, it was milder than the Mets' home opener.

15 - At 42°, today's low was the first since 4/1 to be at 40° or warmer. 

16 - Today was just one degree below average, but it was the fifteenth day in a row with a below average mean temperature.  During this period temperatures were nearly eight degrees below average. 

 

MAY

11 - Today was Mother's Day and its high/low of 72°/53° (slightly above average) was identical to last year's.  One big difference is that no rain fell this year while 0.53" fell during the evening of last Mother's Day.

19 - Seven of the eight days since 5/12 had morning lows of 58° or 59°, five degrees above average.  The one "outlier" had a low of 60°.    

24 - Today's high of 93° (on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend) was the first 90-degree day of the year.  However, the heat was short lived as a cold front moved through during the evening, dropping the temperature into the upper 50s by the following afternoon.

 

JUNE

12 - A steady, all-day rain amounted to 1.98".  Because of the clouds and rain, the high temperature got no higher than 63°, fifteen degrees below average.

24 - After a sweltering high of 93°, a cold front produced a thunderstorm at around 4 PM that had tragic consequences.  Although it produced just 0.18" of rain, the storm created a tremendous wind shear that caused Eastern Airlines Flight 66 to crash as it attempted to land at Kennedy Airport, killing all but twelve of its 124 passengers (pictured at top of page).

 

JULY

12 - A heavy shower moved through between 8-9 PM, dumping 0.25" of rain - the first measurable to fall on this date in 16 years.

20 - Two years after 1.73" fell on this date, 1.74" fell today.  In both instances, the rain was produced by strong thunderstorms.  In 1973, 1.65" of the rain fell between 10 PM and midnight.  This year, 1.10" of the rain poured down in the hour between 6-7 PM, and 0.54" fell between 10 PM and midnight.  This was also the third Sunday in a row to have more than an inch of rain (7/6 had 1.78", 7/13 had 1.65").

25 - An intense rainstorm dumped two inches of rain between 11PM last night and 1AM today.  These were the fifth and sixth days in the past three weeks to receive more than an inch of rain.  Additionally, fourteen of the past twenty-three days had rain, which amounted to 11.77", enough to make this the second rainiest July on record.  Since no more rain fell for the rest of the month it would remain the second rainiest, falling just 0.12" short of the 1889 record.

30 - With a high of 87°/66°, today was the 14th day this month with a mean temperature at seasonable levels - the most of any month in the 1970-2022 period.

 

AUGUST

2 - Today was the hottest day of the year as the afternoon high reached a blistering 98° after a sultry morning low of 77°.

3 - Today was the fourth day in a row with temperatures in the 90s.  Highs on these days were: 93°, 93°, 98° and 96° (today).

5 - Today's high of 91° was the last 90-degree day of the year, four weeks earlier than average.  In total the year had only eight days in the 90s, well below the average of 19 (in the years since 1940).

7 - Five days after the hottest temperature of the year, today's high was a chilly 64° under overcast skies.  This was 20 degrees below average - and more typical of a day in late April.

24 - A nighttime thunderstorm between 9-10 PM dumped 0.69" of rain, making it the rainiest day of the month.

26 - Today had the year's last low in the 70s, the earliest date for this occurrence in the years since 1970 (later tied in 2009).  Typical date for the last 70-degree low is Sept. 11.

 

SEPTEMBER

1 - With winds out of the northeast, it was a cool Labor Day, with a high/low of just 69°/55°, ten degrees below average.  The one saving grace was that skies were sunny.

14 - The AM low of 46° was the chilliest reading of the month, 16 degrees below average, and tied the record for the date.

25 - Between Aug. 28 and today only two days had an above average mean temperature.  This 4-week period was 4.7 degrees cooler than normal.  Today was seven degrees below average, with a high/low of 62°/55°.

26 - For the fourth day in a row, more than an inch of rain fell.  At the onset of this deluge rain fell for 47 consecutive hours.  Total rain during these four days amounted to 7.43".  (1.82" fell today; 1.05" yesterday; 2.26" on 9/24 and 2.30" on 9/23).

27 - Although it was just 0.02", the rain that fell shortly before daybreak made this the ninth day in a row in which some rain fell.  (The first day of this streak also received 0.02").  In total, 8.95" of rain fell, most of it coming during four days in a row (Sept. 23-26) that each had more than an inch of rain.

28 - The 6th NYC Marathon was held today and runners breathed a sigh of relief as the City dried out from the week's heavy rainfall.  By contrast, today's skies were sunny with near seasonable temperatures (high/low of 69°/57°).

 

OCTOBER

13 - The 0.11" of rain that fell during a late night thunder shower was the first measurable rain to fall on this date in sixteen years. 

14 - Today's high, under sunny skies, was a balmy 83°, just one degree shy of the record for the date.  This reading was warmer than any in September.  The last time it was warmer than today was back on Aug. 27, seven weeks ago.

15 - Today was the second day in a row of sunny and unseasonably warm conditions.  Although today's high of 82° was one degree lower than yesterday, the morning low of 66° was eight degrees warmer.

31 - Sunny and cold, with a high of 50°/31°, eleven degrees below average.  The morning low was the first temperature of 32° or colder this fall, a few weeks earlier than usual.  When trick-or-treaters were out and about the temperature was a nippy 43°.

 

NOVEMBER

9 - Six of the past seven days had highs in the 70s, including three record highs today (75°), yesterday (76° ) and on 11/4 (78°).  The average high during this week was 73°, sixteen degrees above average, and more typical of mid-to-late September.  

27 - 0.45" of rain fell between 5 AM-1 PM, making for a damp Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

 

DECEMBER

22 - Light snow fell throughout the morning and continued until mid-afternoon, accumulating 1.8".  This was the first measurable snow of the winter.  And befitting the first day of winter, it was also quite cold, with a high/low of 32°/24°.

24 - A high/low of 23°/16° made this the coldest day of the entire year, and was 13 degrees colder than average.

25 - Most of the 1.8" of snow that fell on 12/23 was gone, but a mix of sleet/snow/freezing rain this afternoon and evening accumulated 0.5", giving NYC a touch of a White Christmas.  The day's high of 33° occurred as midnight approached.

26 - Two days after the coldest readings of the entire year, today's temperature was 30 degrees milder.  And yesterday's icy mix changed to a hard rain that amounted to 1.66" by early afternoon.

31 - Showers moved in after dark and between 11PM and midnight 0.05" of cold rain fell.  When the countdown to 1976 took place, the temperature was in the mid-30s.

Today in New York Weather History: June 18

 

1925 (Thursday)

Today, with a high of 91°, was the tenth daily high temperature in the 90s so far this year - the earliest date for this many (a record that still stands).

 

1967 (Sunday)

Today was Father's Day, and after a seasonably warm and dry day, flooding rains dumped 1.83" of rain in the two hours between 9-11 PM.  Rain continued through mid-afternoon on 6/19, at much lower rates, totaling 3.18".  This heavy rain was attributed to a tropical depression that moved up the coast.

 

1995 (Sunday)

It was a sunny and hot Father's Day as the high reached 90°.  This was also the first 90-degree day of the year, the latest date for this occurrence in ten years (it typically occurs at the end of May).

 

 

1997 (Wednesday)

During a thunderstorm, 0.36" of rain fell in just five minutes time between 12:05-12:10 AM on 6/19, and 0.64" fell in fifteen minutes between 12:04-12:19 AM.  However, because the National Weather Service doesn't recognize Daylight Saving Time, and uses Standard Time year-round for its records, this rainfall was credited to 6/18.

 

2006 (Sunday)

Similar to 1995, today was Father's Day and the high of 91° was the first 90-degree reading of the year.  (The next 90-degree reading on Father's Day would be in 2018.)

 

2009 (Thursday)

2.30" of rain fell today, a record for the date.  Rain fell until 5:30 PM, preventing the afternoon temperature from getting higher than 64°, sixteen degrees below average.  Today's rain brought the month's total to 7.61", making this the rainiest month since April 2007.   

 

2014 (Wednesday)

Although this year's meteorological summer (June 1 thru Aug. 31) would have eight days in the 90s, today, with a high/low of 89°/76°, saw the warmest mean temperature of the year until Sept. 2 (which had a high/low of 92°/77°).

 

2017 (Sunday)

It was a sultry Father's Day, with the dew point in the low 70s throughout the day, peaking at 74° early in the afternoon.  Combined with a high of 85°, the heat index reached the low 90s.

 

2018 (Monday)

Yesterday and today both had highs of 91°, but there was a distinct difference between the two days in terms of comfort level as today was much more humid.  As a result, today's heat index rose to 96°, which was nine degrees hotter than yesterday (this afternoon's dew point was in the low 70s, while it was only in the upper 40s yesterday).

 

2022 (Saturday)

After yesterday's sultry conditions (bright sunshine and a high of 88°), today felt like October as skies were overcast and afternoon temperatures only in the mid-60s; adding to the chill were winds that gusted between 30-40 mph.  (Despite this change in weather, it appeared half of the City's residents hadn't heard the day's forecast as they were walking about dressed as if they expected a repeat of yesterday's summer-like conditions.)

Unrelenting Rain - New York's Most Lengthy Rainy Spells

 

 

A typical month in New York sees about four inches of precipitation, and storms that drop an inch or more occur about once or twice each month.  However, the jet stream occasionally becomes stuck in a pattern that results in storms coming our way in rapid succession.  Additionally, there are times when frontal systems stall for a number of days (the last thing you want to hear as a summer weekend approaches).  When these types of atmospheric situations occur copious amounts of precipitation can be the result.  (Conversely, the same dynamics can create extended periods of dry weather.)

 

Rather than highlight individual rainstorms, this analysis looks at stretches of time when multiple storm systems produced excessive precipitation over the course of a few weeks or more.  What follows is a rundown (or is it "raindown"?) of the most rain-drenched periods New York City has experienced since 1970 (thru 2023) ranked by amount of precipitation:

 

• June 30 - Sept. 2, 2021 (29.29" in 65 days) -  Nearly half of 2022’s precipitation fell in this nine-week period.  And embedded within these nine weeks were two 13-day periods that saw much of the rain as 9.14” fell between June 30 and July 12 and 16.09” fell between Aug. 21 and Sept. 2.  Two tropical systems, Henri and Iris, accounted for almost all of the rain in the latter period
  

• Aug. 9 - Sept. 8, 2011 (23.16" in 31 days) - What a way to end a summer, as seven days had more than an inch of rain, with three storm systems dumping more than five inches.  This included 6.87" from Hurricane Irene at the end of August.  The rain that fell during these 31 days accounted for nearly 1/3 of the year's total precipitation.  Interestingly, in the midst of this deluge, there was an 8-day stretch in which no rain fell.

• Oct. 30 - Dec. 31, 1972 (19.53" in 63 days) - During this 9-week period (making it the lengthiest of the rainy spells listed), there were five rainstorms of one-inch or more and another five that produced between 0.90-0.99".  By far, the biggest storm, was the gully-washer of November 8 that produced 5.60", most of which fell in just 12 hours.  

• May 8 - June 14, 2013 (17.60" in 38 days) - This extended wet spell followed one of the driest Aprils on record (1.31").  There were six days in which an inch or more of rain fell, including the first day of the period when 3.01" fell during the AM rush hour.  The most rain fell when tropical storm Andrea visited the area, dumping 4.77" between June 6-8.  Andrea was the second earliest tropical system to affect NYC and produced the second biggest June rainstorm on record.

• Feb. 10 - Mar 30, 2010 (17.28" in 49 days) - This 7-week period of inclement weather was comprised of two very active periods, each about two-and-a-half weeks long, separated by two weeks of tranquil weather.  It was also somewhat unique because of a substantial amount of snow fell.  In less than three weeks, 36" piled up in February from snowfalls of five, ten and twenty-one inches.  Then, in March, there were two intense nor'easters on March 13 and March 29-30, each flooding the area with about four inches of rain.  The storm on the 13th was particularly fierce because of winds in the 40-75 mph range. The 17.28" of precipitation that fell in these seven weeks accounted for 35% of the year's precipitation.  

• Nov. 7 - Dec. 21, 1977 (17.11" in 45 days) - More than half of the rain fell during one of New York's all-time biggest rainstorms.  On Nov. 7-8, 9.19" fell for 38 consecutive hours, with seven inches pouring down in a twelve-hour period between 2 AM-2 PM on the 8th.  

• Oct. 7-25, 2005 (16.72" in 19 days) - Although it ranks sixth, this may be the most impressive of all our "monsoons" because of how few days it took to amass this amount of rain.  In less than three weeks, the rain that fell was comparable to four months of rain.  Seven days had more than an inch of rain (and two reported 4.26").  More than half of the rain fell in a 3-day period, between Oct. 12-14, when 8.55" was measured.  And in the midst of all this rain, there was a stretch of seven days of dry weather (similar to what occurred during the deluge of 2011).

• July 12 - Aug. 22, 2018 (15.77" in 42 days) - There was a 7-day streak from July 21-27 in which 2.89" of rain fell; a near identical amount fell on 8/11; and on 7/17 a torrential downpour produced 2.24" in little more than an hour.  And nearly eight inches fell on seventeen other days during this six-week period. 
  

• April 4-27, 2007 (14.07" in 24 days) - More than half of the rain came from a nor'easter on April 15-16 that dumped 8.41" of rain over 36 consecutive hours.  There were two other days during this period that picked up more than an inch of rain.  During this rainy month temperatures were four degrees below average, including a stretch of sixteen days in a row in which temperatures were cooler than normal.

• May 21 - June 22, 2003 (12.83" in 33 days) - Ten days had rainfall of more than half-an-inch, with the most being 2.75"on June 4.  Two-thirds of the days reported some rain.  Besides being wet, this nearly 5-week period was also cool, with temperatures 5.5 degrees below average.

• Aug. 5-29, 1990 (12.36" in 25 days) - Nearly ten inches of rain fell over six days, much of it coming down during thunderstorms.  On Aug. 10, 4.64" fell during two strong thunderstorms, one in the early AM and one in the early evening.  The evening storm dumped nearly two inches of rain in an hour.

• July 6-25, 1975 (11.73" in 20 days) - Nearly twelve inches of rain fell in just under three weeks, much of it from thunderstorms that dumped large amounts of rain in very brief periods of time.  Six days received more than an inch of rain and four thunderstorms produced more than inch of rain in an hour. 

• Sept. 8-29, 2004 (11.34" in 22 days) - Most of the rain came from three tropical storms:  Frances (9/8) dumped 3.77"; Ivan (9/18) contributed 2.17"; and Jeanne (9/28-29), the biggest rain producer of all, dumped 4.66".

• Dec. 5, 1973 - Jan. 4, 1974 (10.74" in 31 days) - There were six rainfalls of one-inch or more between Dec. 5-26, with the biggest rainfall being 2.65" on Dec. 20-21.  Measurable rain fell during 3/4 of the days during this wet stretch of day, the highest percentage of any period on this list.

 

Honorable Mentions 

Between March 1 and April 25, 1983, 24.56" of rain fell - enough to make it the second rainiest period on the above honor roll.  However, 1983's precipitation totals were invalidated after it was determined that Central Park's rain gauge had been broken for much of the year.  Therefore, I can't award the top spot to this period.  However, so much rain fell during this nearly 8-week period (there were ten rainstorms of one-inch or more), that even if the amount was discounted by 33%, the adjusted amount would still be 16.46", good enough for 7th place.

And although it didn't cover weeks or months, the 11-day period from April 22 to May 2, 2023 is worthy of mention because in that brief period 7.64" of rain fell, almost all of it from three storms that each produced more than two inches of rain.  (The 7.30" of rain that fell in the last nine days of April is the most to fall in that time frame and accounted for all but 0.40" of that April's total rainfall.)  

 

 

 

 

Today in New York Weather History: June 17

 

1978 (Saturday)

Winds off the ocean from the southeast created a bank of clouds that resulted in there being just a two degree difference between the high and low.  And although the low of 62° was seasonable, the high of 64° was sixteen degrees below the norm.    

 

1989 (Saturday)

In the past two weeks rain fell on twelve of the days, amounting to 7.28".  Coincidentally, last summer had an equally wet two-week period that coincided with the same date range, with just about the same amount of rain measured (7.44").

 

 

2001 (Sunday)

A lot of rain fell overnight and throughout the morning, totaling 1.53".  This was a record amount for the date (broken ten years later).  Then skies quickly cleared in the afternoon, salvaging Father's Day.

 

2004 (Thursday)

After a muggy afternoon, in which the high reached 87°, 0.57" of rain poured down during a thunderstorm between 5-6 PM.  Then more thundershowers popped up later, producing an additional 0.42" of rain.  

 

2010 (Thursday)

This was the fifth morning in a row with a low temperature of either 64° or 65° (a few degrees above average).  Today's and 6/13's low of 65° book-ended three days with lows of 64°.

 

2011 (Friday)

Two thunderstorms moved through before dawn and then two more during the afternoon, dropping 1.82" in Central Park's rain bucket, a record for the date (breaking the previous record set ten years earlier).     

 

 

2014 (Tuesday)

It was very warm and humid, but the first 90-degree day of the year was not to be as the high topped out at 89° (it reached 91° in Newark).  However, the first 70-degree low of the year was registered (two weeks later than usual).

 

2017 (Saturday)

The 1.39" of rain that fell between 11:30 AM and 2 PM was nearly three times the amount that had fallen so far this month (0.48"), and almost equal to the amount that fell since May 23 (1.42"). 

 

2018 (Sunday)

Mostly clear and hot, with a high of 91°, making this the first Father's Day to reach the 90s in twelve years.   Today's heat was somewhat mitigated by low humidity (24% during mid-afternoon), which produced a "feels like" temperature three degrees cooler than the air temperature.  Today's high was 37 degrees hotter than Mother's Day.

2024 (Monday)

This was the seventh day since 6/4 with a low of 65° (and the the fourth day of the past five).  

Today in New York Weather History: Father's Day (1970 - 2023)

 

 

1970 (June 21)

A cool day (high/low of 65°/58°) with 0.45" of rain between 1-4 PM.

1971 (June 20)

Under a mix of sun and clouds the high temperature reached 84°, four degrees above average.

1972 (June 18)

It was a very soggy day with steady rain falling from noon onward, amounting to 1.37".  Temperatures stayed in the 60s all day. 

1974 (June 16)

A late morning thunderstorm between 11 AM and noon dumped 0.42" of rain.  The rest of the day was overcast and the afternoon high rose only into the low 70s.

 

 

1977 (June 19)

Warm and humid with a high/low of 88°/74°, eight degrees above average.

1985 (June 16)

Rain fell overnight until 7 AM, and then a thunderstorm moved through between 7-8 PM.  In total, 1.19" of rain fell, making this the rainiest Father's Day since 1972.

1987 (June 21)

An inch of rain fell between 4-5 AM and then the daylight hours were overcast, foggy and oppressive.  Meanwhile, LaGuardia Airport picked up nearly four inches of rain while JFK had very little.  The overcast skies kept the temperature nearly 20 degrees cooler than yesterday's torrid high of 96°. 

 

 

1991 (June 16)

The day was miserably hot under hazy sunshine.  Today's sweltering high/low of 94°/76° was fifteen degrees above average.

1993 (June 20)

Warm and humid with a high of 85°.  Thunderstorms after 10 PM produced 0.50" of rain, making this the rainiest day of a dry June.

1994 (June 19)

Not only was this the hottest day of the summer, but also the hottest Father's Day on record, as the high reached 98° (eighteen degrees above average), after a low of 75°.  This tied June 22, 1988 for the highest temperature in June since 1966's 101°.

1995 (June 18)

Sunny and hot, with the first reading in the 90s of the year.

2001 (June 17)

A lot of rain fell overnight and throughout the morning, totaling 1.53".  This was a record amount for the date (broken 10 years later) and the rainiest Father's Day in the 1970-2023 period (topping 1972).  Then skies cleared quickly in the afternoon.

 

 

2004 (June 20)

The morning low of 57° was the same as that on Father's Day 1997 and 1992, the coolest readings on the holiday in the 1970-2021 period.

2006 (June 18)

Today's high of 91° was the first reading in the 90s this year. 

2014 (June 15)

If you forgot to buy Dad a necktie there was no need to fret since the weather was gift enough as skies were mostly clear and the afternoon temperature rose to a seasonable 80°.

2015 (June 21)

Significant rain that had been predicted from the remnants of tropical storm Bill didn't materialize as just 0.25" fell overnight (1.50" had been forecast).  However, with this storm being a dud, Father's Day turned out to be nice and summery, with temperatures in the upper 80s under partly cloudy skies.  Then a quick downpour between 6:00 and 6:20 PM dumped more rain than what fell in the wee hours of the morning.

2016 (June 19)

It was a beautiful, beautiful Father's Day, with a high/low of 88°/66° under deep blue skies.

2017 (June 18)

It was a sultry day, with the dew point in the low 70s throughout the day, peaking at 74° early in the afternoon.  Combined with a high of 85°, the heat index reached the low 90s.

2018 (June 17)

Mostly clear and hot, with a high of 91°, the first Father's Day in the 90s in twelve years. This high was 37 degrees hotter than Mother's Day.  Today's heat was somewhat mitigated by low humidity (24% during mid-afternoon), which produced a "feels like" temperature three degrees cooler than the air temperature.  

2022 (June 19)

It was a beautiful Father’s Day despite it being ten degrees cooler than average (high/low of 73°/54°), along with a stiff breeze that persisted throughout the day (but not as windy as yesterday, which had wind gusts of 30-40 mph).  This was the first Father’s Day since 2012 not to have a high of 80° or warmer (when the high was also 73°).  And the last time the low temperature was this chilly on Father’s Day was in 1958.  Furthermore, humidity late in the afternoon dropped to 25%, which was comparable to the humidity level on Father's Day 2018.

Looking Back at New York Weather: June 16

 

1967 (Friday)

With a high of 96°/71°, today would be the hottest day of the year.  The high was one degree shy of the 1891 record.  This was the fifth June in a row to have a high of 95° or hotter - the longest such June streak on record.

 

 

1981 (Tuesday)

Today's high soared to 93°, the first reading in the 90s this year.  This was the latest date for the summer's first 90 since 1963, when it occurred on June 24.  (The typical date is in late May.)  Besides the heat, there was unbearable humidity to contend with as the dew point in the early afternoon reached 80°, producing a heat index of 109°.  In the years since 1950, this dew point is the highest on record for Central Park.

 

1982 (Wednesday)

After a warm and sticky day, with a high/low of 87°/68°, thunderstorms moved in after dark.  The rain came down heaviest between 11 PM-1 AM when 0.58" fell.

 

 

1985 (Sunday)

Today was Father's Day, and rain fell overnight until 7 AM, then a thunderstorm moved through between 7-8 PM.  In total 1.19" of rain fell.

 

1988 (Thursday)

This was the fifth day in a row with temperatures in the 90s, the longest heat wave since one that lasted seven days in July 1983.  The average high during these five days was 93°.

 

 

1989 (Friday)

0.21" of rain fell tonight, bringing the total rainfall in the past eleven days (since June 6) to 7.16".  Additionally, low temperatures between June 9 and today were all in the 58°-60° range; (average low during this is time of the month is in the low 60s).  High temperatures, however, ranged between 61° and 84°.

 

1990 (Saturday)

It was a miserably hot and humid Father's Day.  Under hazy sunshine, the day's high/low of 94°/76° was fifteen degrees above average.  There hasn't been a reading in the 90s on this date since (through 2024).

 

 

1998 (Tuesday)

Today was the first 80-degree day of June (after there were ten  in May), as well as the first day this month with an above-average mean temperature (+3 degrees).  This was the latest date for June's first 80-degree reading since 1916 (when it occurred on June 18).

1933 (Thursday)

Less than a week after a record high of 97° (on 6/9), this morning's low of 48° was half that temperature, and also a record for the date.

 

1971 (Tuesday)

Showery (0.32" fell) and cool, with a high/low of just 60°/56°.  The high temperature was nineteen degrees below average and more in line with the second week of April.

 

1974 (Saturday)

High temperatures of today and the previous three days: 79° (today)-78°-77°-76°. 

 

1983 (Wednesday)

Today's high was 92°, the fourth day in a row with a high in the 90s.

 

1988 (Wednesday)

For the second day in a row the high reached 96°.

 

1989 (Thursday)

Overcast skies, AM drizzle, and winds off the ocean resulted in just a three-degree difference between today's high (61°) and low (58°).  The low was five degrees below average, but the high was 19 degrees below the norm.

 

1994 (Wednesday)

Today's high reached 96°.  This was the first of four days in the next 30 with a high of 96° or hotter.  (Through 2024 there hasn't been a reading in the 90s on this date since.)

 

1998 (Monday)

Today was the fifteenth consecutive day with cooler than average temperatures.  During these days high temperatures ranged between 65° and 73° (average is 78°).  This made the first half of June six degrees cooler than average.

 

2014 (Sunday)

Today was Father's Day, and if you forgot to buy your Dad a necktie there was no need to fret since the weather was enough of a gift as skies were mostly clear and the afternoon temperature rose to a seasonable 80°.  Today's low of 59° was the third, and last, day with a low in the 50s this month, the fewest since June 1996 (which also had three, all in the first three days of the month). 

 

2022 (Wednesday)

Today, with a high of 83°, was the third day in a row with a high of 80°+ in Central Park - the first time this year, and the deepest into a year since 2003.  Typically, a streak of this length occurs around May 21-23.  (The first reading of 80°+ this year, on 5/21, was the latest since 1988).

 

1974 Weather Highlights for New York

 

 

JANUARY

3 - Less than a month after an epic ice storm (Dec. 16-17) another winter storm brought significant sleet and freezing rain.  Beginning mid-afternoon and continuing thru daybreak on 1/4, 0.71" of liquid precipitation was measured and 1.8" of sleet/snow (much of it fell today).  Just two degrees separated today's high and low (32°/30°).

18 - Today was the coldest day of the winter, with a high/low of 23°/6° - seventeen degrees below average.

21 - Until today, it had been a cold January, with temperatures averaging three degrees below average.  But then, for the rest of the month, a big January thaw got underway as temperatures averaged 15 degrees above average (high/low of 55°/39°).

27 - Today's high of 66° was 28 degrees above average (three degrees shy of the record), and came in the midst of an eleven-day stretch (Jan. 21-31) in which temperatures were 15 degrees above average. 

31 - Today was the tenth day of the past eleven in which temperatures were ten degrees or more above average (the other day was nine above average).  After a high of 60° today, the temperature tumbled to 35° by midnight after a cold front moved through. 

 

FEBRUARY

8 - The weekend began with the biggest snowfall of the winter as six inches fell between 1-10 PM on Friday.  This storm followed a bout of sleet and freezing rain over five of the previous six days.  Today's high/low was 25°/20°.

13 - After eleven consecutive days with colder than normal temperatures (7.5 degrees below average), today's afternoon high shot up to 55°, 15 degrees above average.

 

MARCH

4 - Today's high of 70° was the warmest reading of March, 24 degrees above average, and a record for the date.

8 - With a high of 69°/low of 48°, today had the mildest mean temperature of the month, twenty-one degrees above average.  The month began very mild, with the first eight days of March averaging twelve degrees above average (in addition to today, two other days were twenty degrees or more above average).  The rest of the month would be two degrees below average.

21 - Two inches of rain fell between 6 AM and 2 PM, with more than half of it pouring down between 10 AM-1 PM.  The temperature during the morning was stuck at 39°, but then jumped to 55° between noon and 1 PM (during a thunderstorm) before falling back into the upper 30s by evening. 

25 - Today's low of 20° degrees was the coldest reading in March and came three weeks after the month's mildest reading.  It was also the coldest temperature since mid-February.

 

APRIL

6 - The Yankees' home opener was played in cold and overcast conditions, with afternoon temperatures falling into the low 40s.

10 - The Mets played their home opener in equally raw conditions as the Yankees.  The day started with some light snow that amounted to 0.3".  Although the snow was over long before the game, crowds had to contend with gusty winds which made the already cold game-time temperature of 41° feel like it was in the upper 20s.        

29 - The day after the first 80-degree reading of the year (the high was 80°), today's high of 89° was a record for the date - 23 degrees above average.

 

MAY

17 - Today's high temperature reached 92°.  Not only was it twenty-one degrees above average, but a record for the date and the first 90-degree day of the year.

27 - It was an overcast and chilly Memorial Day, with a high/low of 55°/52˜.  The afternoon high was 19 degrees below average and is the chilliest high temperature on Memorial Day in the Monday holiday period (1971 onward).  Despite the cloud cover, there was no rain.

 

JUNE

10 - In a month that was on the cool side (2.6 degrees below average), today stood out because it was quite hot.  With a high/low of 95°/74°, it was fifteen degrees above average.  This was the first of four days this summer with a high of 95° (the other three were in July).

15 - High temperatures of today and the previous three days: 79° (today)-78°-77°-76°. 

21 - This was the fifth year in a row that rain fell on this date.  This year's rain amounted to 0.51", and fell during two afternoon thunderstorms.

28 - At 62°, this was the fourth day in a row in which the high temperature was only in the low-to-mid-60s, more typical of mid-April.  During this chilly spell, the high temperatures were 20 degrees below average. 

30 - Thunderstorms between 8 PM-midnight produced 0.26" of rain, making this the ninth day of rain in the past ten.  It was also a chilly ten days, seven degrees below average.  The amount of rain to fall during this period wasn't particularly excessive, as just 1.80" was measured.

 

JULY

1 - This was the ninth day in a row with some rain, but total rainfall during these days amounted to just 1.42" (half of it fell on the first day of rain on June 23).  Temperatures were also unseasonably cool during these days, with a high/low of 73°/59°, eight degrees below average.

4 - Today was the hottest day of the year, with a high/low of 95°/78° under sunny skies.  Today's high was 40 degrees warmer than Memorial Day.  And although three other days this summer had a high of 95°, today's morning low was the warmest, producing the year's warmest mean temperature.

10 - Today was the fourth day in a row in the 90s.  Highs during these days were: 92°, 92°, 95° and 90° (today).

AUGUST

3 - Since July 30 afternoon highs were: 89°, 88°, 88°, 89° and 88° (today).

17 - 2.86" of rain fell between 1-6 PM, a record for the date, and accounting for half of the month's total rainfall.  Nearly half of today's rain fell between 5-6 PM (1.29").

24 - Today's high of 91° was the last 90-degree temperature of the year, coming one day before the average date for this occurrence.  In total, the year had 17 such days, which is just about the typical number (18). 

 

SEPTEMBER

3 - 3.26" of rain fell, most of it falling between 4 PM-1 AM.  At one point, 1.28" fell in the hour between 7-8 PM (this came less than three weeks after 1.29" fell in an hour in the early evening of 8/17).  The day's rainfall was just 0.06" shy of the record for the date, set five years earlier.

7 - A little over an inch of rain fell during the morning, making this the tenth day of the past twelve to have rain.  Since Aug. 27, 7.10" of rain was measured.  Today's rain was the first to fall on this date since 1958.  

24 - This morning's low of 43° (14 degrees below average) was the earliest date for a temperature this chilly since 1963, when a low of 40° was posted on this date - the record for the date.

29 - This was the first New York City Marathon to see rain as thundershowers produced 0.32" of rain between 2-3 PM and 0.10" between 4-5 PM.  It was also a warm day, with a start-time temperature of 74°.

 

OCTOBER

3 - It was a very chilly day, with a high/low of 50°/38° (19 degrees below average).  Winds were out of the northwest and skies were a mix of sun and clouds.  The morning low tied the record.

4 - This was the fourth day in a row with a mean temperature that was 10 degrees or more below average; during these days temperatures were 14 degrees below average.  Today's low of 38° was the same as yesterday's but this morning's reading was one shy of the record.  Skies were clear.

15 - Today saw the first rainfall of the month, 0.20", which moved in  after 8 PM.

16 - The 2.15" of rain that fell today, a record for the date, accounted for almost all of October's rainfall (2.59").  It fell throughout the day and was over by 9 PM.

19 - The morning low of 32° tied 1940 for New York's second earliest freezing temperature on record (the temperature dipped to 30° in 1940, also on 10/19).  The afternoon high of 49° was what the typical low should be.

20 - This morning's low was 31°, breaking the record set two years earlier.  This was the third earliest date for a temperature of freezing or colder. 

21 - For the third morning in a row the low was 32° or colder, the longest such streak so early in the season since a four-day streak occurred between Oct. 29 and Nov. 1, 1925.

31 - A very chilly October (4.6 degrees below average) ended very mild with a high/low of 70°/60°, 11 degrees above average.  At peak trick-or-treat time (7 PM) the temperature was still 66°.

 

NOVEMBER

1 - Today's high of 81°  (23 degrees above average) was warmer than any day in October, and the first 80-degree reading in six weeks.  However, this reading was still three degrees shy of the record set in 1950.

12 - Although it was just 0.44", today was the rainiest day of what was a dry month (0.94" fell in total).  Half of today's rain fell between 11 PM and midnight.

14 - Today, with a high of 61°, was the seventh day in a row in which the high temperature was between 60° and 62°,  seven degrees above average.  (In October 2021 there would be 12 days in a row with lows in the 60°-62° range.)

25 - The first measurable snow of the season, a minuscule 0.1", fell between 10-11 PM.

29 - For the third day in a row the high was 43°, five degrees below average.

 

DECEMBER

2 - Rain that began last night after 9 PM continued until daybreak today and amounted to 2.49".  (The 2.16" that fell today was a record for the date.)  Just before the rain came to an end, 0.80" poured down in the hour between 5-6 AM.

16 - A hard, steady rain fell between 9 AM-10 PM and amounted to 2.25", a record for the date.

25 - One month after the first measurable snow of the season fell, the second snowfall of the season occurred early this evening.  And like last month, it was the same insignificant amount - 0.1".

Today in New York Weather History: June 14

 

1956 (Thursday)

With a high/low of 99°/76°, today was the hottest day of the year.  The high was a record for the date, and twenty degrees above average.  (This would be the first summer since 1951 not to have a reading in the triple digits.)  Today was part of a four-day heat wave that was book-ended by a chilly high/low of 66°/56° on June 10 and 66°/55° on June 20.

 

 

1961 (Wednesday)

The day after the hottest reading of the month  (96°), the month's chilliest reading (53°) occurred just before midnight.  

 

1988 (Tuesday)

Today's high was a blistering hot 96°.

 

2008 (Saturday)

2.01" of rain fell, most of it between 4-10 PM.  At one point 0.24" fell in a five-minute period between 8:07-8:12 PM, and 0.84" fell in the hour between 4:26-5:26 PM.

 

2011 (Tuesday)

A plethora of fives as today was the third day in a row in which 0.05" of rain fell after 0.55" fell on June 11.

Today in New York Weather History: June 13

 

1927 (Monday)

It was a beautiful day for the ticker tape parade held in Lower Manhattan to honor Charles Lindbergh after his non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean.  Skies were mostly sunny, the humidity was low, and the high/low was a seasonable of 77°/60°.

 

 

1982 (Sunday)

It was a damp and very cool day as 1.65" of rain fell and the high was just 55°, twenty-three degrees below average.  Only three degrees separated the high from the morning low.

 

1984 (Wednesday)

I was at the Waverly Theater in Greenwich Village to see Ghostbusters when a fierce thunderstorm struck between 5-6 PM.  (For a while the thunder outside coincided with a scene in the movie with thunder and lightning.)  Before the storm struck it had been a stifling hot afternoon, with a high of 94°.

 

 

 

1989 (Tuesday)

1.16" of rain poured down in a two-hour period during a thunderstorm in the wee hours of the morning (2-4 AM).  

 

1998 (Saturday)

1.31" of rain fell between 11 AM-1 PM.  It came down especially hard in the second hour when 0.85" fell.  This heavy rainfall followed a steady rain yesterday that amounted to 1.29".

 

2000 (Tuesday)

Just two days after a sweltering high of 92°, today's high was an autumn-like 60°.

 

2013 (Thursday)

The day was dreary, wet, and cool, with two periods of heavy rain, one in the morning between 9:30 and 11:00, and the second in the evening.  In total, a little more than an inch of rain was measured in Central Park, bringing the month's total rainfall to more than nine inches.  Coming after eight inches of rain fell in May, this was only the seventh time NYC had experienced consecutive months with eight inches or more of precipitation.  

 

 

2014 (Friday)

Heavy showers moved through the area around 9 AM and a severe thunderstorm struck between 5:45 and 7:30 PM.  In between, during the afternoon, the sun broke through for the first time in five days.  The 1.28" of rain that fell came one year after 1.26" fell on the same date.

 

2017 (Tuesday)

Today was  the third day in a row with temperatures in the 90s, with today being the hottest (high/low of 94°/77°).  However, compared to LaGuardia and Newark Airports, with their respective highs of 101° and 99°, Central Park was in a relative comfort zone.  With today's heat, this became the first year since 1976 to have its first 90-degree days come in back-to-back heat waves (the first heat wave was May 17-19).  Finally, yesterday's and today's lows of 76° and 77° were the first that were 75°+ on these dates in the 1970-2024 period.
