Monthly Temperature Ranges in New York City (1970 - 2020)
A typical month in New York experiences a 45-degree range in temperature between its coldest and warmest reading. The range has been as small as 24 degrees (July 2004) and as great as 72 degrees (April 2002). March, on average, sees the largest temperature range (52 degrees) while August has the smallest (35 degrees). Some other observations:
- About 1/4 of of the months since 1970 have experienced their coldest and warmest temperature within a week of each other. 2014 had the most such months - nine.
- On average, one month each year has its warmest and coldest temperatures occur within three days of each other. (The last time this happened was in August 2014.) The most dramatic occurred in April 1977 when the warmest temperature, 90°, came just three days after the month's coldest temperature of 25°.
- On an annual basis the average coldest reading is 9° and the hottest is 96°, a range of 87 degrees. 1977 had the greatest spread, 106 degrees (-2° to 104°), while 1998 and 2002 had the smallest, 79 degrees (14° and 93°, and 19° to 98°, respectively).
- There have been five instances when a month's highest and lowest temperatures, respectively, occurred on the first and last day of the month. The last time it occurred was in June 2009.
