Looking Back at New York's Weather: May 27

1880 (Thursday)

For the third day in a row the high reached the mid-90s, and the low was in the low 70s: 95°/73°, 95°/72°, and 96°/72° (today).  Today's high would be the hottest reading of the year.

1950 (Saturday)

With a high of 77° this was the last of three days in a row with highs in the 70s.  This was the first time it happened this year - the deepest into a year of any year since 1940 (thru 2024).

1961 (Saturday)

Today was one of the chilliest days on record for late May as the high was only 47°, twenty-seven degrees below average - more typical of the second week in March; the low this morning was 41°.  Conditions were raw and damp, as light rain fell throughout the day, amounting to 0.61".  Before the cold and rain moved in yesterday afternoon the temperature had risen to 78° at 1:30 PM (and followed a high of 85° two days ago).

1974 (Monday)

It was an overcast and chilly Memorial Day, with a high/low of 55°/52°.  The afternoon high was 19 degrees below average and is the chilliest high temperature on Memorial Day since it became a Monday holiday in 1971.  Despite the cloud cover, there was no rain.

1991 (Monday)

Today was Memorial Day and the high of 89° was the hottest reading on the holiday since 1969 (later tied in 1999).  Well after dark, thunderstorms between 11 PM-3 AM dropped an inch of rain, the first rain in two weeks.  This was also the thirteenth day this month to see a high in the 80s, the most of any May on record (and the last four days of the month would also get into the 80s).  This record would hold until 2015.

Memorial_day

2001 (Saturday)

Although just 0.08" of rain fell, it was the first rain to fall on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend in eleven years.

2013 (Monday)

It was a glorious Memorial Day, with crystal clear skies and afternoon temperatures in the seasonable mid-70s.  However, this was the first Memorial Day since 2005 not to have a high in the 80s.

2018 (Sunday)

The temperature fell from 80° at around 1 AM to the upper 50s by the time evening approached.  This was the day after the high reached 89° (and the heat index was 93°).  Today's much chillier air was ushered in by morning rain, which amounted to 0.44".  Additionally, the afternoon was windy, with winds gusting to 25 mph.

2024 (Monday)

It was a dismal Memorial Day, with a brief downpour shortly after daybreak, when 0.20” fell, and again in the early afternoon when 0.74” fell, mostly between 2:00 and 3:00.  With 0.96” in total, this was the rainiest Memorial Day since 2016 (when 1.65" fell before 9 AM), and eighth wettest on record.   Despite the low ceiling and wet conditions, the high was seasonable and the low of 66° was eight degrees milder than average.

Looking Back at New York City Weather: May 26

1925 (Tuesday)

This was the third day in a row with a low in the low 40s.  The low on the 25th was a record (that still stands).  This came after a high of 91° on 5/23.

40s

1961 (Friday)

After the day's high of 78° was reached at 1:30 PM, the temperature dropped quickly upon passage of a cold front and the arrival of rain.  By 3:00 the temperature was down to 60° and by midnight it had fallen to 47°.  1.11" of rain fell, with 0.42" falling in the storm's initial hour, between 2-3 PM.  (An additional 0.61" fell the next day.)

1970 (Tuesday)

This was the thirteenth day of the past fifteen to have measurable rain.  In total, 3.27" fell, with the greatest daily amount, 0.93", falling today from strong thunderstorms between 4-8:30 PM.

1984 (Saturday)

A brief, but severe, thunderstorm struck in the early evening on what was the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.  Although just 0.11" of rain fell in Central Park, there was extensive tree damage.  Before the storm struck it was warm and humid, the warmest day of the month (high/low of 85°/66°).

Clipart_severe_thstorm

2001 (Saturday)

This was the seventh day in a row in which the high temperature failed to reach 70°.  The average high during these days was just 61°, twelve degrees cooler than average - quite a contrast from the first four days of the month, which had an average high of 90°.

Clipart_sweater

2003 (Monday)

We were stuck in an unseasonably cool pattern that was similar to the one two years earlier.  Today, and the previous four days, were 11 degrees cooler than average.  Two days had a high/low of 56°/50°, two others were at 56°/51°.  Not only was today cool, but rainy as well, with 1.28" of rain measured (the most precipitation in a 24-hour period since the big snowstorm on President's Day).

2010 (Wednesday)

Under clear skies, the temperature soared to 92°, making this the hottest day of the month.  At 11 PM it was still 85°.  And the full moon was shining beautifully.

Clipart_overheated_sun

2014 (Monday)

Today was Memorial Day and conditions were very summery as the high reached 86° after a low of 66°.  This was the eighth time in the past nine years that the temperature on Memorial Day rose into the 80s (last year, with a high of 73°, was the exception).  Since 2006 the average high on the holiday has been 84°, ten degrees above average.

2015 (Tuesday)

With a high/low of 88°/67°, today was the warmest day of the month, which would end up being the second warmest May on record (behind 1991).  Today was also the beginning of the sixth week in which less than an inch of rain fell in total (going back to April 21).

2016 (Thursday)

Under sunny skies the temperature reached 90° for the first time this year, very close to the average date of the first occurrence of this reading.  However, because afternoon humidity was around 25% the "feels-like" temperature was 86°.  Interestingly, last May, which was the second warmest on record, had eighteen days in the 80s (including ten between 85° and 88°), but none were in the 90s.

2017 (Friday)

For the fourth day in a row the low temperature was 56°, which was at the seasonal average.

2018 (Saturday)

Today, the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, was very warm and humid, with a high/low of 89°/72°.  This was the fourth day this month with a high of 88° or hotter, making this the first May with this many days this hot since May 2000.

2021 (Wednesday)

Today's conditions were warm and sticky.  Temperatures varied greatly in the area, as the high reached 86° in Central Park (and at LaGuardia), while Kennedy Airport was just 75°, and Newark Airport's high was 94° (its fourth reading in the 90s this month; CPK had none).  Rain showers in the early evening and around midnight produced 0.07" of rain, the most in two-and-a-half-weeks.  (Because severe thunderstorms were predicted, the Mets and Yankees postponed their games, but the storms didn't materialize.)

Today in New York Weather History: May 25

1952 (Sunday)

This is the only year in which more than an inch of rain fell on 5/25.  The amount measured was 1.80", with a little more than half (1.12") falling between 9 AM and noon.

1967 (Thursday)

It was a raw and damp day with a high/low of only 46°/42°.  Winds out of the northeast gusted between 25 and 30 mph, producing wind chills close to 32°.  Light showers and drizzle fell throughout the day (0.32" was measured).  The day's high, 27 degrees below average, was more typical of the second week of March.

Clipart_coldweather

1975 (Sunday)

This afternoon's temperature was in the upper 50s, one day after a sizzling high of 93°.

1986 (Sunday)

The weather was very nice for New Yorkers when they formed their part of the "Hands Across America" chain this afternoon.  Skies were partly cloudy and the high temperature reached 80°.

1987 (Monday)

It was a very cool Memorial Day as the high of 63° was eleven degrees below average.  Weatherwise, the holiday came one week too early as temperatures would be in the 90s the following weekend.

1991 (Saturday)

Today was the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and the day's high reached 93°, nineteen degrees above average.  This tied the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend in 1975 for the hottest reading for any day during this holiday in the 1971-2023 period.

1994 (Wednesday)

An evening thunderstorm (including hail, a rarity in Manhattan) delayed by three hours my 8:15 flight to Pittsburgh, where I was going to attend my father's funeral.  I finally arrived there shortly before 1 AM.

Thunderstorm_over_manhattan

2000 (Thursday)

0.12" of rain fell between 1-2 AM, making this the eighth day in a row in which there was rain.  3.26" fell during these days.

2005 (Wednesday)

Gray skies and light showers made for a very chilly day as the high reached only 53°, twenty degrees chillier than average - and more typical of March 25.

2007 (Friday)

Today, with a high of 90°, had the first reading in the 90s this year, just a few days earlier than the average date for this occurrence.  This broke a string of four years that had their first 90-degree temperature in June.

2013 (Saturday)

Today's high/low of 54°/45° made this, a Saturday, the chilliest day of any Memorial Day weekend in the 1971-2020 period (in 2021, the high/low on both Saturday and Sunday would be 51°/47°).  Skies were mostly overcast, winds gusted to 33 mph hour, and light showers popped up throughout the morning and afternoon.  The high temperature was nineteen degrees below average.

2015 (Monday)

Today was Memorial Day and it was practically a carbon copy of last year's holiday, i.e., sunny and warm.  The only difference was that today's high of 85° was one degree lower than last year's.  This was the ninth year of the past ten in which Memorial Day had a high in the 80s.

2017 (Thursday)

Following last week's early heat wave (highs of 90°, 92° and 91° from 5/17-19), the highs today and the previous five days were all below 70°.  Today, with steady light rain and drizzle, was the coolest day of them all, with a high of just 59°.  Today's rainfall of 0.58" brought the month's total to 6.06", making it the second wettest May of the century (behind 2013, which had eight inches).

Today in New York Weather History: May 24

1911 (Wednesday)

This was the ninth day this month with measurable rain, all of which had less than 0.10" (and the last two days with precipitation in April also had less than 0.10").

1927 (Tuesday)

Today's high/low was only 51°/49°.  It came in the midst of a 48-hour period in which 2.61" of rain fell (from 2 PM on 5/23 until 7 AM on 5/25).

1934 (Thursday)

After a a low of 59° the high jumped to 90°, making this the sixth consecutive May with a high in the 90s, the longest such streak for the month of May.

1963 (Friday)

New York's latest date for a low temperature in the 30s occurred today.  The low of 39°, which occurred shortly before daybreak, was 17 degrees below average.  Under clear skies the temperature rebounded to 64°, but that was still eight degrees below average.

39

1972 (Wednesday)

Today's high of 86° was the warmest reading of the month, the same temperature as April's warmest reading (on 4/19).

1975 (Saturday)

Today's high of 93° (the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend) was the first reading in the 90s this year.   However, the heat was short lived as a cold front moved through during the evening, dropping the temperature into the upper 50s by the following afternoon.

1983 (Tuesday)

Low temperatures over the past four days exhibited the following pattern: 59°-58°-59°-58° (today), three degrees above average.

1989 (Wednesday)

0.70" of rain fell this morning, bringing the month's total rainfall to more than ten inches.  This amount pushed it past May 1984 to make this the rainiest May on record (a record that still stands).  An additional 0.21" of rain would fall before month's end.

1992 (Sunday)

One day after a high of 92°, the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, a cold front moved through mid-afternoon and the temperature dropped sharply, from 82° to 45°.  (Somewhat similar to what happened during Memorial Day weekend in 1975.)

1999 (Monday)

1.22" of rain fell in the three hours between noon and 3 PM.

2012 (Thursday)

It was a showery day, with nearly an inch of rain falling in the rain gauge at Central Park.  One particularly heavy shower produced 1/2 inch of rain in 1/2 hour during the morning (11:23-11:53 AM).

Today in New York Weather History - May 20

1978 (Saturday)

Today's high of 90° was the first reading of 90°+ this year.  It came just three days after three days in a row (5/15-17) had highs in the 50s.  The next 90-degree day wouldn't be for another month (6/19).

1995 (Saturday)

The day after overcast skies and a high of 58°, today was sunny with a balmy high of 80°.

1996 (Monday)

Today saw the first reading of 90°+ this year.  And at 96°, a record for the date, it would also be the hottest reading of the year.  After today, there would be only two more days with highs in the 90s.

Sunbathing_centralpark

2000 (Saturday)

Today's rainy and raw conditions made the five-day heat wave of May 5-9 a distant memory.  Today's high was just 51° - twenty-one degrees chillier than average.  By contrast, the high on May 9 was 93°, twenty-four degrees above average.

2002 (Monday)

This morning's chilly low of 43° was a record for the date.  (Yesterday was even chillier, at 41°, but it wasn't a record.)   This was one month after an early heat wave between 4/16-19 that saw highs of 92°-96°-91°-89°.

2017 (Saturday)

Today's high of 65° was 26 degrees cooler than yesterday - the biggest drop in temperature following a day in the 90s since 1988 (when the high of 63° on 6/2 was 27 degrees cooler than the day before).

Biggest Temp Diff After 90-Degree High

2018 (Sunday)

It was warm and on the humid side, with a high of 81° - which was 25 degrees warmer than yesterday's high.  This was the reverse of what happened last year on this date.

2019 (Monday)

One month after the year's first reading in the 80s (4/19), today had the second high temperature in the 80s.  And at 85°, the high was the warmest in more than eight months (when it was 93° on 9/5).

2023 (Saturday)

A 14-day streak with sunny or clear skies ended today as rain soaked the City mostly during the afternoon.  The 0.77" that was measured in Central Park was nearly double the amount that fell in the first 19 days of the month.  Rain totals on Long Island, Westchester County and in Connecticut were much higher than NYC's, with many towns picking up between 1.50" and 2.50".

Today in New York Weather History: May 19

1962 (Saturday)

The high temperature soared to 99°, making this the hottest reading ever recorded in the month of May.  (The temperature jumped 41 degrees in ten hours after the day's low at 6 AM.)  May's previous hottest temperature was 96°, which occurred in three years - 1880, 1939 and 1941.  Some relief arrived between 8-9 PM when a thundershower moved through, dropping the temperature from 87° to 70°.

1975 (Monday)

Seven of the eight days since 5/12 had morning lows of 58° or 59°, five degrees above average.  The one "outlier" had a low of 60°.

1976 (Wednesday)

It was a raw and chilly day, more like March 19 than May 19, with a high/low of only 52°/38°.  This was eighteen degrees below average.  Morning showers made the day feel even colder.

1994 (Thursday)

A raw and damp day, with a high of only 54°, eighteen degrees below average.  The last time there was a high temperature this chilly was on April 12 (when the high of 54° was just five degrees below average).

1997 (Monday)

Today was the only day of the month that warmed into the 80s (the high was 83°), the fewest number of 80-degree days since May 1983, which had none.  (2003 and 2005 would also have no days in the 80s.)  This lack of 80-degree temperatures contributed to making this the chilliest May in thirty years.

2005 (Thursday)

Today was the second consecutive day with a high/low of 70°/53°, replicating a pair of 70°/53° highs/lows on May 18-19, 1932.

2017 (Friday)

Today's high of 91° was the third day in a row with a high in the 90s - the first time for a three-day heat wave in May since 2001 (and the 34th year, since 1869, to begin its 90-degree readings with a heat wave).  Cooler air moved in after 8 PM and by midnight the temperature had fallen to 66°.  (It would then be three weeks before a temperature of 80° or warmer was reached.)

2023 (Friday)

Today was the last day of a 14-day streak with sunny or clear skies.   Temperatures were 2.5 degrees above average during this streak.  Embedded in this two-week period was a 12-day streak in which humidity during the afternoon dropped to 25% or lower.

Looking Back at New York Weather: April 30

1874 (Thursday)

The last three days of the month all had lows of 32° or colder, joining eight other days this month with lows this cold.  No other April has had this many days with lows of freezing or colder; these days contributed to this being the coldest April on record.  (The following April and April 1943 would have nine such days, the second most on record.)

1925 (Thursday)

It was rainy (0.55" was measured) and very cool, with a high/low of  just 45°/42°.  The high was a record for the coolest maximum temperature on this date.

1940 (Tuesday)

Today's high of 67°, just a few degrees above average, was the mildest reading of the month.  (The warmest high temperature in April in the years before then was typically in the 78°-82° range.)  In the years since 1900 this was the only April with no readings of 70° or warmer - until 2020.

No70

1942 (Thursday)

Today's high of 91°, a record for the date, followed a high of 72° yesterday, and 53° the day before that.  The previous record for the date, 86°, was set just last year.  In both years, the humidity was quite low during the afternoon, at around 25%.

1962 (Monday)

After three days of summer-like warmth (highs of 91°-89°-80°), this afternoon was raw and showery with temperatures only in the upper-40s.

1963 (Tuesday)

Up until today, just 0.39" of rain had fallen this month, and it appeared it would become the driest April on record.  However, an all-day rain brought 0.89", and the month ended up tied for third driest April.  Until 2014, today's rainfall was a record for the date, which was the second smallest amount for a daily record (Sept. 9's daily record is 0.86", which was established back in 1902).

1990 (Monday)

Today's high of 56° (ten degrees below average) was quite a drop from 73° yesterday and 90° two days ago.

2012 (Monday)

The final nine days of April all had chillier than average temperatures - the longest such streak since the end of March last year.  But despite these below average conditions, the month was the unprecedented thirteenth in a row with above average temperatures.

13

2013 (Tuesday)

With a high/low of 68°/51°, today's mean temperature was two degrees above average, just enough to move the month's mean temperature from 0.1 degree below average to right at the average.  Thus, it joined August 1999 and August 1985 as the only months since 1980 to have a mean temperature on par with the monthly average.  April's high was 0.1 above average; the low was 0.1 below average.  However, what was far from average was the month's precipitation, which amounted to just 1.31".  This was 71% below the norm of 4.51", making it the fifth driest April on record (and the driest in 50 years).

2014 (Wednesday)

Until this year, April 30 was one of three dates that had never seen an inch of rain.  That distinction ended today as nearly five inches flooded the area, with more than half of it falling after 6 PM.  The 4.97" that fell was the tenth greatest daily rainfall on record (now ranked twelfth).  Besides the rain, it was also a very raw day, with temperatures only in the 40s.

Clipart_torrents_of_rain

2019 (Tuesday)

Today was the eighteenth day this month with measurable precipitation, the most of any month since May 2012, and the most on record of any April (the most of any month is nineteen days, in Dec. 1972 and May 1973).

However, despite this high frequency of rainy days, the amount of rain that fell in April, 4.55", was an average amount.  (Seven days had 0.03" or less.)  By contrast, New York's ten rainiest Aprils averaged 12 days of precipitation (ranging from nine to fifteen).

2023 (Sunday)

After drying out overnight from yesterday’s deluge of 2.49”, more rain moved in after 11 AM and it turned heavy between 3-7 PM when 1.57" poured down; by midnight 2.32” had fallen.  This brought April’s total rainfall to 7.70”, making it the seventh wettest April on record.  This was quite an accomplishment considering that in the first three weeks of the month just 0.40” had fallen.  Then three storms dropped more than two inches of rain in the last nine days of the month : 2.19” on 4/22-3; 2.79” on 4/28-29; and 2.32” today.

Finally, despite this being the seventh day in a row with below average temperature (averaging five degrees chillier than average) the month ended up being the second mildest April on record, behind April 2010.  This followed the mildest January on record, the third mildest February, and 25th mildest March.

1930 (Thursday)

This was the second cold day in a row, with temperatures that were more typical of the first week of March.  Today's high/low of 44°/31° followed yesterday's 42°/32°.  Both morning lows were records (which still stand).  These were the coldest days of the month.

2001 (Tuesday)

After soaring to 87° in the early afternoon (the warmest reading of the month), a cold front moved through, and by midnight the temperature had fallen to 52°.  The colder air was made even chiller by winds gusting between 30-40 mph.  This was the third day in a row with 80-degree temperatures, and today's high was the warmest in more than eight months (since Aug. 9).  It was also the warmest reading in April in ten years.

First 80

Since 1980, the average date of the first reading of 80° or warmer is April 21 (a month later than the average date of the first reading of 70°+).  This is about a week earlier than 1900-1979, and two weeks earlier than the 1869-1899 period.  It's happened as early as March 13 (in 1990) and as late as June 7 (in 1924).

This was the 19th day in a row with no measurable precipitation, the longest stretch of dry weather since one of 26 days in October 1973.

1981 (Tuesday)

A late cold snap saw the morning low tumble to 33°, a year after a low of 32° was reported on 4/17.  (By contrast, the warmest temperature this month, 81°, came at the beginning of April.)  This morning's frosty low was the coldest reading since March 21.

2006 (Thursday)

Today's high of 83° was the warmest reading of the month (and came five days after the year's first reading in the 80s), but what was even more notable was the afternoon's bone-dry humidity, which fell to 10% at 4 PM.  Air this dry in NYC is rare.  (Typical late afternoon humidity in April is around 45%.)

2015 (Monday)

Dreary, windy, and damp, with rain thru early afternoon that amounted to 1.37".  This was comparable to the amount that fell in the previous 30 days (and it was the biggest rainstorm in three months).  After the wind died down, fog rolled in during the afternoon.  Today's rainfall accounted for nearly two-thirds of April's total precipitation (2.08").

2016 (Wednesday)

Today was the seventh day in a row with clear skies and unusually dry conditions, with relative humidity below 20% during the afternoon and early evening (normal is in the 45%-50% range).  And today saw the lowest humidity level of all the days, as it bottomed out at 9% at 6 PM - very similar to ten years earlier on this date.
