Native Ghosts and the Supernatural

Dennis Zitogh of The Smithsonian writes about a new book, “Living Ghosts and Mysterious Monsters,” where a Native storyteller shares ancient and contemporary scary stories.

Here is an excerpt of the article.

"Stories of the unknown come in many shapes and forms that tell of unexplainable—sometimes horrible—things. Some are about demons or evil spirits," says writer and storyteller Dan SaSuWeh Jones (Ponca).

"Others are about inanimate objects, like glowing orbs, apparitions, or even dolls that take on the breath of life. In this book, I have divided the world of American Indian ghosts into five categories: “Ghosts,” “Spirits,” “Witches,” “Monsters,” and “The Supernatural,” to give a clearer, more defined picture of what you may encounter—from an unseen noise to a hideous face to maybe something no one else has ever experienced."

The supernatural aspects of American Indians are not normally shared with the outside world. Superstition and tribal protocols keep many stories from becoming public domain. Recently, I read a book that picked up where my grandparent’s scary stories left off: of Native tricksters; shape shifters, skin-walkers and entities that thrive in the shadows of darkness. In Living Ghosts and Mysterious Monsters: Chilling American Indian Stories (Scholastic Press, 166 pp., $26.99 and $12.99) Dan SaSuWeh Jones (Ponca Nation) writer and storyteller, and Weshoyot Alvitre (Tongva) illustrator, weave ancient and contemporary scary stories from tribal groups from Canada, the United States and Mexico. Thirty-two short stories are told in chilling vivid detail and collected from the thriving tradition of telling Native ghost stories. Tribal definitions and their meanings are explained to help give the reader valuable information to preface each story.

Stories of the unknown come in many shapes and forms that tell of unexplainable—sometimes horrible—things.

In a time when the internet, social media and cell phones were not the principal means of communication, Native people looked forward to sharing good stories. Winter was especially chosen as the primary storytelling season as tribal communal groups were not traveling and had to remain inside for long periods during inclement weather.

In the Western Hemisphere trading stories is an integral part of Native culture, a norm that is still carried on by modern Native peoples. At the end of this book, the writer gives credit in detail of how each of his stories was obtained. As a Native writer this consideration made me feel good that these stories were obtained and are being passed on “in a good way.” With this being said … wait until nightfall, pick up the book and prepare to enter the world of Native ghosts and the supernatural.

ARIES   (MARCH 21 - APRIL 20)

You are not only in the center of your own universe at this time, Aries, you manage to spread your joy into many other sectors. So what do you want to accomplish right now as the good vibes flow? Do you have personal plans to put into motion? Do you want to find a new benefactor? All is possible when your sunny side is up.

TAURUS (APRIL 21-MAY 21)

If a light is suddenly turned on in one or more of your psychological dark corners, start to celebrate, Taurus. Not only are there no goblins and ghosts lurking in there, there is nothing much there to fear at all. Keep yourself open to the wonderful possibilities of the unknown now. You find that there is much more treasure than trash.

Enjoy any social activity and see how far and long you can take it. The next few weeks will bring you into the orbit of some fairly fascinating and fun-filled folks.

CANCER   (JUNE 22 - JULY 23)

Let’s continue to focus on your career, Cancer, as the planets keep charging up this sector for you. You may want to postpone some big professional decisions but I advise that you not delay too much longer. Let your innate happy disposition and love shine through and onto others. The feelings will reciprocate and your path to success accelerated.

LEO   (JULY 24 - AUGUST 23)

It’s time to scratch those itchy travel paws, Leo. Life has been too cool and sedate. Your need to get out of your usual routine may be too tempting to resist, especially because so many people are reaching out to you with love and connection. VIRGO   (AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 23)

Virgos have a certain something about them that is not only enticing but positively heady. You attract anyone you desire and find that others seem to gravitate into your tempting orbit. What will you do with all of this love energy? I suggest that you use it to reinforce a current romance or, if you are on the prowl, find your soulmate.

LIBRA   (SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23)

Libras always seem to seek fairness, balance and diplomacy. Now you find that your ability to schmooze others and bring warring parties to the negotiation table is in top form. Find commonality and use your personal charisma to strengthen relationships and bring people together. If not you, then who? If not now, then when?

Now is the time to bring family together and create new and happy memories. Not only are you expansive and open to the possibilities, you have an uncanny knack to understand what others need. So show how adept you are at bringing others together, Capricorn. Weave together connections even between estranged relatives. See where it leads.

AQUARIUS   (JANUARY 21 - FEBRUARY 19)

Whatever you have to say, Aquarius, say it. Others listen and respond. You are filled with great ideas and important plans that set your life’s course in a positive direction. Use the extra amounts of charisma and charm you now have to sway anyone to any one of your ideas. This rare talent can lead to the greater good. Help heal the world.

PISCES   (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20)

Treat yourself to something fun and heart-warming, Pisces. Life has been more stressful and there is nothing nicer than spoiling yourself (and select others) a little bit. You deserve a reward and some time to simply enjoy life. If money is tight, find ways to treat yourself in more affordable ways. Don’t they say that the best things in life are free…?

Lucky Numbers for the Week of May 13, 2022

Lottery ads tell us you only need a dollar and a dream. But it is also helpful to have a list of lucky numbers to help spur the good fortune ... or fortunes. So with that in mind, here are some lucky numbers that can be used in any helpful way. I gazed into a pool of water, Nostradamus-like, and contemplated the cosmos. Then I mixed the tarot cards and allowed the spirits to guide me to the cards that represent the lucky numbers for this week. Nothing is guaranteed but who knows ....?

I choose eight numbers because 8 is the number of of wealth.

Here are the lucky numbers for the week of May 13-19, 2022:

4, 9, 27, 35, 38, 52, 60, 77

Mercury Retrograde May-June 2022

Mercury retrograde2Astrologer Felissa Rose Gero gives us her assessment of the upcoming Mercury retrograde. Thank you, Felissa!

For the second time this year the planet Mercury will be going retrograde.    This occurs from 7:49 am EDT on Tuesday, May 10th until 4:01 am EDT on Friday, June 3rd.  Mercury goes retrograde at 4 degrees and 50 minutes in Gemini and turns direct at 26 degrees and 5 minutes of Taurus.

Retrograde energy is internalized and tends to slow down the actions of whatever the planet represents.  Mercury rules communication and  how one obtains  and understands information,  thoughts and ideas.   People who have this placement at birth are more likely than those not born with this placement to go over whatever their  thoughts are  on  a matter for they are more likely to think before they speak.   Many authors and writers were born with Mercury retrograde.   During this time, it’s an opportunity to go over and reflect on one’s perceptions enabling more clarity when they are later expressed.

More often now than at other times things connected to communication either slow or break down.  This includes  phones,  computers, as well as circuits and wires.   Often  when one is more likely to be aware of the importance of getting necessary upgrades to appliances as well as to one’s home or car.   If possible, it would be better to make  these needed changes when Mercury is no longer retrograde.  For,  if it’s an option or it  can wait, it would be a good idea to do so.   But If this isn’t possible get a long-term warranty enabling a cost free or at least a lower price  replacement after Mercury has turned direct.

Mercury rules information which also relates to one’s health.   If a medical or dental appointment can wait it would be a good idea to do so in order to get a clearer diagnosis and understanding of a problem.   Mercury rules the nervous system, the  lungs and tubes in the body.   Since it governs the  breathing there can be an increase of allergies during this time.   So, expect more allergy related  coughing and sneezing.

As Mercury rules legal papers along with information and communication,  be careful signing contracts while the planet is retrograde.  If you must sign, pay particular attention to the details and fine print that seems to be in so many of them.  Have someone you trust, or an attorney not connected to the contract  read it and discuss it with you.  Often there’s something that is likely to be overlooked or not clear.

Looking inward is a positive way to focus while Mercury is retrograde. The understanding of either past or present events can aid in  bringing clarity to whatever decisions or actions that didn’t quite go the way one hoped or expected.  We’re here to both learn as well as understand and the thoughtful and introspective direction of a retrograde Mercury can aid in insight along with awareness.

After Mercury goes direct both communications and information run more smoothly.   Even more so after Mercury comes to the degree it went retrograde at in this case at 4 degrees and 50 minutes of Gemini on June 18th.   In 2022 Mercury will be retrograde again from September 9th until October 2nd and December 29th until January 18, 2023.

Horoscope for the Week of May 9, 2022 - Mercury Retrograde in Gemini Back to Taurus

Mercury retrogrades, eventually backing into Taurus from Gemini. We need to be extra mindful of how we communicate as what we say may be misinterpreted or ignored. Sometimes actions speak louder than words.

ARIES   (MARCH 21 - APRIL 20)

Aries mean what they say … to themselves but others may have misheard. Whatever strong opinion you want to get across to others this week, be sure that you say it clearly, slowly and distinctly. Otherwise who the heck knows what your listeners will actually hear? When in doubt, let your thoughts quietly simmer for a bit.

TAURUS (APRIL 21-MAY 21)

Taureans think that they have all of the financial answers but holding back and waiting may be the more profitable way to go in the long term. Your boldness may come back to bite you if you jump into any investment without doing very slow and careful research first. Allow yourself to be really cheap now to reap rewards later.

GEMINI   (MAY 22 - JUNE 21)

Whatever first impression you hope to make, Gemini, it may not go as you expect. Somehow your communication gets jammed up and the crowd is not hearing what you are saying. Or it could be that you get the dates and times mixed up. Whatever possible confusion occurs, be flexible and keep your great sense of humor!

CANCER   (JUNE 22 - JULY 23)

Going with your intuition can get you a little off course now, Cancer. While it may be tempting to follow your instincts, allow yourself some time to carefully prepare before you act. This can be an excellent time to meditate on things or calm your soul with yoga. Settling into a clear space and relaxing gives you greater focus later.

LEO   (JULY 24 - AUGUST 23)

Friends will set up plans with you but don’t be surprised if the plans change and you don’t realize it. The best thing you can do when any social snafus occur is to gracefully pivot and laugh it all off. You may also find, Leo, that you have accepted too many invitations at one time. It is hard to dance at three parties at the same time.

VIRGO   (AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 23)

Hardworking Virgos find that their good efforts may be a bit of a waste of time now. This doesn’t mean that you should necessarily slack off at work but it does mean that you will need to be hyper focused on what you do and what you say so that no time or effort is wasted with miscommunication. So work smart, not fast.

LIBRA   (SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23)

If you are planning any travel, be sure that you check everything at least twice – what you pack, your itinerary, and travel documents or requirements, really anything. Libras are usually balanced but now the fates may send you a few mishaps that will require extra care and finesse. Once you get on the road it will be quite an adventure!

SCORPIO   (OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 22)

Your best and sexiest moves may not have the desired effect, Scorpio. That is because of miscommunication and not your lack of appeal. Others are interested but you may be giving mixed messages. Check yourself out in the mirror first and see if you are making the best impression possible. Then live and love large.

SAGITTARIUS   (NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 22)

Whatever you want to say to partners, practice it alone first, Sagittarius. There is the risk of you saying something that you didn’t intend to say or what you say could be misinterpreted. Relationships that need a bit of oomph can get it but sometimes saying nothing and just taking comforting action is the best solution.

CAPRICORN   (DECEMBER 23 - JANUARY 20)

Capricorns have a set of plans and projects that they tackle with enthusiasm now, but before you rush into action, carefully review what needs to be done and when. Your efforts should not be wasted with miscommunication or missing steps. In fact, if you have helping hands, be sure those hands know exactly what to do. Oops!

AQUARIUS   (JANUARY 21 - FEBRUARY 19)

Fun may become much more trouble than it is worth, Aquarius. Any festive event can have its unintended surprises if you rush into it and take shortcuts. The best moves will be slow, careful and full of preparation and planning. Ah but even then, your festivities can have a few surprises. If so, then relax and go with the flow.

PISCES   (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20)

A family gathering can go in an unintended direction, Pisces. What you want to do and say and who you want to see can go a little awry at the last minute. Allow yourself the flexibility to handle whatever the fates send your way. Sometimes it is a happy coincidence and sometimes just have to smile and bide your time.
